Mitau Lecture

"’I’m Really Sorry about What Happened to You but, You’re Not One of Us, You’re a Foreigner’: A History of Afrophobia in Contemporary South Africa"

Professor Tiffany Willoughby-Herard, associate professor of African American Studies at the University of California-Irvine, will discuss Afrophobia in contemporary South Africa, exploring earlier understandings of border crossings essential to sustaining the anti-apartheid struggle. In other moments, the ideological crafting of Blackness as a shared colonial condition made the conceptualization of national geography suspect rather than the migrants themselves. Professor Willoughy-Herard explores the fault lines that shore up this type of xenophobia by exploring the anti-apartheid diaspora being made and unmade.
