Macalester Chemistry Programs – Site License or Public License
|ChemDraw and E-Notebook
Chemdraw is a commercial package for drawing chemical structures. Our site license allows anyone with a Macalester email address to use it. This link lays out the steps for downloading ChemDraw for use on your personal computer.
Mestrenova is a data visualization software for NMR files and GC/MS files. To use the Macalester license for Mestrenova, you will need to validate the licenses by connecting to the campus network. Usage will continue as long as you connect to the campus network at least once every 90 days.
Mestrenova older versions choose the copy of version 11.0.2 (release date October 27, 2016) appropriate for your computer’s operating system
Spartan is a chemical modeling program that does detailed quantum mechanical calculations. There are distinct instructions for different platforms and versions of the program:
This link downloads the Wintropy program used in the General Chemistry Sequence (Windows platform only). It models possible microstates in defined systems.
This link points to an online version of Wintropy, which we call Webtropy. (It’s slower than the application version, but it runs on any platform).
Lesser Chemistry Programs–we don’t consider these as useful as the alternatives above, but they may be the off-campus only choice
Advanced Chemistry Development Labs
Makers of several chemistry-related drawing and visualization applications, including ChemSketch, a tool for drawing chemical structures which includes proton and C-13 NMR viewers. They also offer a 3D molecule viewer that aids in the visualization of chemical compounds.
