Each year, the Community Engagement Center nominates students, faculty\/staff, and community partners for recognition from the Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact in partnership with the college president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ma’Kahsa Lane \u201924
<\/strong>Presidents’ Award for Student Leadership<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although COVID impacted community engagement throughout her time at Macalester, Ma\u2018Kahsa maintained a deep commitment to Bonner Community Scholars. Throughout her college career, Ma\u2019Kahsa supported many peers to become involved and deepen their connections within the Bonner community and beyond. Serving as Bonner Program Associate since her sophomore year, Ma\u2019Kahsa has provided exceptional peer leadership for many initiatives including first year outreach & community building, hosting gatherings to extending the reach of Bonner beyond core participants, and creating meaningful opportunities for large group engagement off campus.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Marvin Anderson <\/strong>
Community Partnership Award<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through his founding work at the Rondo Center of Diverse Expressions (RCODE) and the Rondo Commemorative Plaza, Mr. Marvin Anderson has been instrumental in preserving the rich historical heritage of St. Paul’s African American community. RCODE has brought together scores of youth, college students and professors, government leaders, and community elders for learning, healing, innovation, and cultural exchange. Anderson has also collaborated deeply with Macalester students, faculty, and staff over many years and is the epitome of a community teacher and elder. RCODE is a modern outgrowth of the Rondo Days festival and Reconnect Rondo, both endeavors seeking to recapture the cultural enterprise zone of the Rondo community before Interstate 94 broke it up.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Kirisitina Sailiata, Assistant Professor of American Studies <\/strong>
Campus Leadership Award<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Kirisitina Sailiata has passionately demonstrated the importance and value of civic and community engagement at Macalester. She has served on the Mellon grant for Native and Indigenous Initiative (MNI) and as a project co-lead for Mellon Humanities for All Time grant. Dr. Sailiata is a tireless advocate for Indigenous communities and has intentionally fostered impactful partnerships and projects across her scholarship and teaching. Her pedagogical approach to engagement is interdisciplinary, intersectional, and reciprocal, and she has been pivotal to institutionalizing an Indigenous culture and practice of engagement across our campus.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Frank and Mollie Steudle Prize For Civic Engagement <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

An award given to a graduating senior with distinguished work in interdisciplinary studies in physical, mental, and emotional wellness, active in community service, working with the elderly, and planning a career dedicated to helping others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

George Stanley Arthur Prize for for Civic Engagement<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Established by Andrew William Arthur, Class of 1983, and his father, Robert Arthur. Awarded to a graduating senior who best exemplifies Macalester College\u2019s historic tradition of service to the community and is in good academic standing. The form of community service may take different forms, and it is preferred that the recipient have a grade point average of 3.7 or higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each May, a committee made up of faculty, staff, and community representatives select the award recipient(s) for the above cash awards. The committee looks for students who have made a significant contribution of time and effort in the community, and provided leadership to their peers. Past winners have been able to articulate what they have learned from their experiences, as well as what the community gained. These are endowed awards, which means they have specific criteria determined by the donors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
