Dear Macalester community,

We are pleased to announce we are working on plans to reopen the campus in fall with regular occupancy in our residence halls and in-person instruction for most courses. While we are eager to put in motion plans for a campus experience that maximizes togetherness, our top priority remains the health and safety of our community members, so we will continue to follow national and regional trends in COVID case numbers. Science will continue to inform our decisions.

Though we hope to offer more traditional experiences in the fall, next year will be a year of transition. Rather than a “return to normal,” we will focus on building a new normal that incorporates what we’ve learned about creativity, flexibility, and innovation. We anticipate continuing to adhere to an updated version of our Mac Stays Safer community commitment to maintain public health behaviors. We also are thinking through how we can support students who may not be able to learn on campus in the fall.

There are many details we are still working to address. However, what each of us can do now is get the COVID vaccine as soon as we have the opportunity to do so. In Minnesota, all adults (regardless of home state or citizenship status) are now eligible to sign up for free vaccines at drugstores, including several in the neighborhood of the campus. If you have not already done so, please sign-up with the state’s Vaccine Connector. Registration ensures you will receive information about vaccine opportunities and updates. If you have received at least one shot, please share that information with us using this form. We will continue to press our request with the Minnesota Department of Health that we be given the opportunity to serve as a vaccination site, and I will keep you updated on what we learn.

As always, if you have questions, please share them with us at healthresponse@macalester.edu.

Yours,

Dr. Suzanne M. Rivera
President
