Dear faculty and staff colleagues:

On May 29, I shared initial information for faculty/staff about our academic calendar. Today, I want to share additional details about the fall calendar, as well as adjusted deadlines for students to request a deferral or leave of absence.

Fall Academic Calendar

Following is a more detailed look at our fall calendar, including the timing of breaks, deadlines, and exams. When we pivoted to a fully remote format last spring, EPAG made several temporary changes to the policies regarding grading options (S/SD/NC) and withdrawal deadlines, primarily to give students extra flexibility in face of the sudden changes. EPAG has determined that, beginning with the first module of the fall semester, the temporary policies will revert back to the college standard, with the deadlines adjusted for the compressed schedule of the modules.

Adjusted Student Deferral/Leave of Absence Deadlines

Previously we had asked first-year students to share with us whether they plan to defer by July 1. In addition, we’d asked current students to share with us their plans to take a leave of absence by the first day of class. We are now asking first-year students to request a deferral by July 15.  If returning students plan to request a leave of absence in the fall, in order to help us with our planning, we strongly encourage them to submit those requests by July 15.

Mode of Delivery

At the end of June, we plan to make an announcement about the mode of delivery, specifically whether we’ll plan to begin the academic year in person or remotely. That communication also will include detail on student re-registration, physical space planning including student housing, and public health practices and protocols. In addition, we are awaiting guidance from the MIAC and the Minnesota Department of Health on fall athletics.

Please refer to our COVID-19 website as a resource, as it is regularly updated. In addition, Dianna Shandy will continue to send weekly updates. If you have questions that aren’t answered on the site or in her updates, please feel free to send them to Dianna or healthresponse@macalester.edu.

This has been an extremely stressful few weeks, and I would like to acknowledge all the hard work that so many of you continue to put into planning for the fall. I know how frustrating it has been to wait for these decisions to roll out. Thanks to all of you for your continued patience.

Best,
Karine
