This creates an educational environment&#8211;no matter the delivery method&#8211;where all students have an opportunity to learn and demonstrate their mastery of course content.&nbsp; Planning is key to accessible courses, but equally important is the ability to be flexible. Unexpected modifications may be needed, especially in this time of significant impacts to student learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please also refer to our excellent colleague resources at <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.macalester.edu\/macdigital\/\">Macdigital<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/responsive-teaching-and-learning\/teaching\/\">Responsive Teaching and Learning<\/a> sites<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preparing for Courses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Planning for accessible courses is similar to planning for hybrid models and aligns well with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approaches:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consider peer\/faculty connection as a learning goal.&nbsp; This year is unlike any other, so consider ways to connect students to each other or campus connections as part of your learning goals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider options for learning by presenting content in multiple ways (e.g., in a combination of text, video, audio, and\/or image format).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Determine what your learning outcomes are.&nbsp; What is essential to your course that all students must have by the end of the course?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make instructional outcomes, deadlines and timelines clear, BUT plan for increased flexibility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide options for communicating and collaborating that are accessible to individuals with a variety of disabilities (e.g. video, gchat, discussion boards\/platforms, email, and even phone or messaging).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide options for demonstrating learning (e.g., different types of assessments, portfolios, presentations, single-topic discussions).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offer outlines and scaffolding tools to help students with structure. Here are some ideas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Provide lecture outlines\/Powerpoints ahead of time to allow students course structure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cut &#8220;talking&#8221; time down to focus on a few key points and take breaks between the points.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Record synchronous courses for viewing later:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Record and post to voicethread (captions can be added in voicethread).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Post to youtube:&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/creatoracademy.youtube.com\/page\/home\">Youtube Creator Academy<\/a>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Includes auto captions, but can&#8217;t be accessed by students in all countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pacing and Environment\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pace delivery&#8211;include pauses for note-taking and processing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure recorded videos or Zoom meetings are well lighted, especially if you are recording.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider a clear mask for face to face lectures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide short intermissions for review of material\/personal reactions\/questions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider chat\/discussion boards\/non-synchronous responses for course participation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trying a lecture outside?&nbsp; Be sure to inform your class ahead of time about environmental impacts and offer alternatives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engagement:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consider new ways of student engagement: &nbsp;<a style=\"text-align: center\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tees.ac.uk\/lteonline\/2020\/08\/07\/keeping-students-engaged-in-online-or-hybrid-learning\/\">Keeping students engaged in hybrid learning<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accessible Documents<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some basic ideas about accessible texts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Great step by steps from University of Washington on creating accessible MS Word documents and PDF&#8217;s, especially if used in place of texts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two major points:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with a word document and check for accessibility with the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/improve-accessibility-with-the-accessibility-checker-a16f6de0-2f39-4a2b-8bd8-5ad801426c7f#picktab=windows\">accessibility checker<\/a> which can help fix errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Need a PDF? Additionally, captions are useful to a wide variety of viewers such as speakers of other languages, individuals with learning differences, and people viewing in noisy environments.\u00a0 Almost 85% of individuals watching videos use captions at some point during viewing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are ideas for captioning courses, recorded meetings or programs <strong>and a non-exhaustive list<\/strong> that does change, so please check back!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pre-Produced Videos for Courses<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Look for videos with captions already provided (you will know if a <strong>CC <\/strong>is located in the lower right-hand corner).&nbsp; Not all video content on through PBS, Amazon, Netflix is captioned.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If using youtube or Vimeo or other video content, check to ensure captions are accurate!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you need assistance with captioning pre-produced videos for courses, please contact Center for Disability Resources or Brad Belbas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Captions for self-created videos<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Option 1: Outsource<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Companies include&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/\">3Play Media<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rev.com\/\">Rev.com,<\/a>&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/amara.org\/en\/about-amara\/\">Amara<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>General cost for outsourced videos is anywhere from $1 &#8211; $4 minute depending on company and turnaround time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Additional options for captions are being determined..stay tuned!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Option 2: Create your own Voicethread and add\/correct captions:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Voicethread is an excellent tool&nbsp; where you can share multi-media content with students in a course and\/or post to Moodle.&nbsp; &nbsp;Voicethread has great capacity as a class tool overall and can be shared in different countries!<\/p>\n\n\n<section class=\"link-group block-container\" >\n        <div class=\"link-group__featured-row\">\n        <div class=\"link-group__featured-inner\">\n            <div class=\"link-group__featured-inner-inner\">\n                <ul class=\"link-group__featured-link\">\n                                            <li class=\"link-group__link-item\">\n                            <a class=\"base-cta-featured\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/responsive-teaching-and-learning\/teaching\/teaching-with-voicethread\/\" target=\"_self\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t    Teaching with Voicethread\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t    <svg aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"base-symbol base-cta-featured__arrow\" viewbox=\"0 0 24 24\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t    <use xlink:href=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/macalester-2020\/dist\/svgs\/symbol-arrow.svg#icon\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/svg>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n                        <\/li>\n                                            <li class=\"link-group__link-item\">\n                            <a class=\"base-cta-featured\" href=\"https:\/\/voicethread.com\/howto\/closed-captioning\/\" target=\"_self\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t    Adding captions to Voicethread\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t    <svg aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"base-symbol base-cta-featured__arrow\" viewbox=\"0 0 24 24\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t    <use xlink:href=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/macalester-2020\/dist\/svgs\/symbol-arrow.svg#icon\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/svg>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n                        <\/li>\n                                    <\/ul>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Option 3:&nbsp; Otter. ai or another transcription service into video platforms:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/otter.ai\/\">Otter.ai<\/a> has a free version that is both a recording and transcription platform. Users can upload a video, get a transcription, edit it and upload the transcript into another platform. Otter. ai can also be used as a note-taking tool!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The transcripts are easy to edit and show up on videos nicely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Option 4: Youtube auto-captions<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you upload your video to YouTube and set a language, within a day it should have automatic captions added.&nbsp; It is limited in that it requires more editing, captions are smaller <strong>and it is not available in all countries.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These auto-generated captions require editing for accuracy, and to incorporate the important standards listed above.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colorado.edu\/oit\/tutorial\/captioning-using-and-improving-youtube%E2%80%99s-auto-generated-captions\">Learn how to edit YouTube&#8217;s automatic captions.&nbsp;<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>YouTube also allows you to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.colorado.edu\/oit\/tutorial\/captioning-making-captions-transcripts-youtube\">type a transcript as you watch the video<\/a>&nbsp;and will conveniently pause the video as you type.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you have successfully added and published a caption file with any of the methods above, be sure to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/blog\/remove-automatic-captions-youtube-videos\/\">unpublish the automatic captions<\/a>&nbsp;from YouTube!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you do not want your video to live on YouTube, we still recommend using it as an alternative to create and\/or sync your captions. Once this is done, you can <a href=\"http:\/\/titaniumhelp.fullerton.edu\/m\/FAQ\/l\/498105-how-do-i-export-the-youtube-auto-generated-captions\">download a caption file from YouTube<\/a>&nbsp;(that will now include timings!) to use elsewhere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need help with captioning for your courses, please contact us: disabilityresources@macalester.edu or Brad Belbas, our Technology Liaison (bbelbas@macalester.edu)\u00a0 for support!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Attendance and Limited Assignment Extensions<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Limited flexibility with attendance and extensions of time on assignments are increasingly common accommodations.&nbsp; Specifics on managing this accommodation are coming, but it is important for faculty to determine the following and discuss with students early in the course:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What are reasonable time extensions for assignments? What assignments can deadlines not be extended?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What extensions are already built into the course for all students as part of a universal design approach? If extensions of time or flexibility are built into your course, please be sure to share with the student how this is included. <strong>Be ready to consider cases where a student with a disability may need even more flexibility.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How does the instructor need to be notified (before the deadline or in some cases, after) of extension needs?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are the parameters for attendance flexibility and what are the limitations?&nbsp; Can students make up missed classes via asynchronous methods or other assignments?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider making an agreement early in the semester and then reviewing mid-module.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Accessible Course Evaluations\/Exams<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional time for testing is one of the widest used disability-related accommodations at Macalester: it supports a wide-range of disability types and needs.&nbsp; Proactively adding additional time to quizzes\/tests\/exams can reduce time and effort of arranging additional time accommodations for both faculty and students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Best practices for accessible in-course assessment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consider evaluation alternatives to long exams, especially if they are provided on Zoom\/computer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Please read Faculty Notification Letters and discuss with the student how exams will be managed, especially in Fall 2020.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Determine where additional time can be proactively added to the quizzes, tests, and\/or exams in the course.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Determine the appropriate length of time for the assessment(s).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add additional time as indicated by an accommodation, or even longer where appropriate, to the quiz\/test\/exam.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Want to add time that includes everyone, including with those with accommodations? Make a statement about how you will be providing exams.&nbsp; Some suggested language:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\">The&nbsp;<strong>quizzes\/tests\/exams<\/strong> in this course have been designed using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) <\/span>guidelines and&nbsp;<strong>(give the percentage)<\/strong> additional time has been added to each <strong>quiz\/test\/exam<\/strong>&nbsp;in support of all students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even with these considerations, there may be cases where students require specific testing requirements that aren&#8217;t met by Universal Design implementation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faculty or students may also decide tests are best proctored via the MAX Center remotely or in single, physically distanced spaces on campus (after the &#8220;quiet period&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/disability-services\/faculty\/aim-system\/\">Testing Accommodations with the MAX Center <\/a>instructions in these cases.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A responsive teaching model includes designing courses in a thoughtful and inclusive way.
