{"id":2693,"date":"2023-10-10T21:36:12","date_gmt":"2023-10-10T21:36:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/disability-services\/?page_id=2693"},"modified":"2023-10-10T21:36:13","modified_gmt":"2023-10-10T21:36:13","slug":"career-support-students-with-disabilities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/disability-resources\/students\/career-support-students-with-disabilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Career Support: Students with Disabilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Finding a career after graduating college can be a daunting prospect for many students, but it can feel especially challenging for students with disabilities.&nbsp; Students with physical or emotional disabilities may face greater challenges, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fear of disclosing disabilities during the application or interviewing process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inadequate information regarding disability rights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Concern about managing discriminatory practices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, recent graduates with disabilities may be less likely to find employment after graduation than those without disabilities, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can you do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Connect with our great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/career-exploration\/\">Career Exploration<\/a> staff to investigate various career paths or internship opportunities. Work-learning and knowing what to expect can make a big difference!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Service learning can also assist students with experiences that are work learning opportunities and a way to mobilize action!&nbsp; Connect with Mac&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/cec\/\">Community Engagement Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Connect with the Center for Disability Resources on specific questions related to disability disclosure, and stay tuned for events on this!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Job Fair Events<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Disability:IN<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Virtual Job Fair for Students with Disabilities IN Minnesota!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/di-mn.org\/\">Disability:IN Minnesota<\/a>&nbsp;is hosting its annual&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/di-mn.org\/portfolio-item\/2020-virtual-career-fair\/\">Job Fair<\/a> for individuals with disabilities.&nbsp; This year\u2019s event will be held virtually on <strong>Nov. 6<sup>th<\/sup> from 8:00 to 12:00<\/strong> and supported by the Twin West Chamber of Commerce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twinwest.com\/elevate-futures\">Elevate Futures<\/a> platform where students can build their individual profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers will have their virtual booths open to attendees three days in advance of the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students will then be able to schedule 10 to 15 minute sessions with HR reps for the day of the fair itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mac graduates have been attended and placed through this program at the Mayo Clinic and Health Partners!&nbsp; Join us!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Job and Internship National Resources<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wrp.gov\/\">Workforce Recruitment Program<\/a> \u2014&nbsp;Applications for this year have closed.&nbsp; Stay tuned for updates!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Options<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cosdonline.org\/\">Career Opportunities for Students with Disabilities<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;Discover how COSD can help you find a meaningful career as you navigate through school.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.benderconsult.com\/\">Bender Consulting<\/a>&nbsp;assists individuals with disabilities in getting hired and recruited for positions within the private and public sector.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.limeconnect.com\/\">Lime Connect<\/a> \u2014 Lime Connect assists students with scholarships, professional development webinars along with information about internships, and full-time job opportunities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaas.org\/program\/entrypoint\">American Association for Advancement of the Sciences Entry Point<\/a>&nbsp;is a program that offers internship opportunities for students with disabilities. Internships range in discipline from computer science, business to science and engineering.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.disabledperson.com\/\">disABLEd Person, Inc.<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 Great resource for job listings and scholarship information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aapd.com\/\">The American Association of People with Disabilities<\/a>&nbsp;provides a Congressional Internship Program for college students with disabilities.
