{"id":387,"date":"2019-09-11T17:29:22","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T17:29:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-disability-services\/?page_id=387"},"modified":"2025-10-05T16:59:28","modified_gmt":"2025-10-05T16:59:28","slug":"rights-and-responsibilities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/disability-resources\/disability-information-and-resources\/disability-law\/rights-and-responsibilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Rights and Responsibilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As part of the interactive process, each party has both rights and responsibilities as outlined.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student Rights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Access to courses, programs, services and facilities offered through the college<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Appropriate and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reasonable<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> academic accommodations determined on an individual, as-needed basis.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Confidentiality of records and communication except where disclosure is necessary to arrange accommodations, required as \u201cneed to know\u201d, or authorized by the student.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fair evaluation of academic achievement based on&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The right to appeal a decision concerning academic accommodations according to the college\u2019s grievance procedures<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student Responsibilities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Every qualified student with a disability has the responsibility to:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meet and uphold the college\u2019s qualifications and standards as outlined in the Student Handbook and college catalog.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Contact the Center for Disability Resources office to arrange for appropriate academic accommodations in a timely manner. Students who need accommodations that take an extensive amount of time to prepare, such as alternate format texts, sign language interpreters, or computer aided real time translation (CART) are urged to contact the Director of Center for Disability Resources as soon as courses for the following semester are confirmed.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Inform professors at the beginning of each semester about the need for any necessary and reasonable academic accommodations and to ensure accommodation plans have been received.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provide the Center for Disability Resources office with appropriate documentation from a qualified professional, which verifies the diagnosis of the disability, explains how the disability limits participation and, accordingly, the need for specific accommodations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">College Rights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester College has the right to:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Identify and establish course requirements, essential functions, abilities, skills, knowledge, and standards for courses, programs, services, and facilities and to evaluate and determine reasonable accommodations on this basis<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Request current and appropriate documentation from a qualified professional to verify the need for reasonable academic accommodations.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Consult with students in making the final determination regarding the selection of effective, appropriate and reasonable academic accommodations.
