{"id":403,"date":"2019-09-11T17:33:50","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T17:33:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-disability-services\/?page_id=403"},"modified":"2023-10-10T22:44:08","modified_gmt":"2023-10-10T22:44:08","slug":"determining-essential","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/disability-resources\/faculty-3\/determining-essential\/","title":{"rendered":"Determining What is Essential in a Course or Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether a requested accommodation would fundamentally alter an essential requirement of a course will generally need to be determined on a case-by-case basis, in light of the specifics of the course and the requested accommodation.&nbsp; Faculty are not required to determine this on their own but as part of the interactive process.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Essential Requirements Defined: What are the learning outcomes for the course?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essential requirements are the<\/span><b> outcomes (including skills, knowledge, and attitudes) all students must demonstrate with or without using accommodations.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Some students might use accommodations and some might not, but all students should achieve the same learning outcomes.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The process is important, of course, but not necessarily essential. Focusing on course outcomes will help instructors to define the course\u2019s essential requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Essential vs. Non-essential Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difference between essential and non-essential requirements is similar to the difference between \u201cessential\u201d and \u201cpreferred\u201d skills listed in job descriptions. An employer may want to see both sets of skills, but only the essential skills are an absolute requirement of employment.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, in courses instructors can articulate essential outcomes that all students must demonstrate in order to successfully complete the course, as well as preferred outcomes they hope students will be able to demonstrate.&nbsp; It is encouraged that faculty list what is essential in their courses as part of their syllabus and <em>why<\/em> that is the case.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Determining Essential Requirements of Courses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To determine the essential requirements of a course, consider the following:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the purpose of the course?&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are there pre-existing skills all participating students must possess?&nbsp; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify what needs to be mastered and demonstrated.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What other knowledge, the background is assumed?<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What outcomes are absolutely required of all students in the course, with or without accommodations?<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What teaching strategies most effectively address the essential outcomes?<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What methods of instruction are non-negotiable. (e.g., making a face to face class online).&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once instructors have determined the essential course requirements they should be able to:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identify what skills, knowledge, principles and concepts in a course must be mastered and demonstrated by all students.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treat all students fairly in this process.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Determine reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities in achieving what is essential and if there are alternative ways that may meet the same objectives.
