To analyze social and systemic issues and understand how we participate in our social world (the network of interactions we have with each other, in groups, structures, cultures, and institutions), it is important to develop critical consciousness and build self-awareness around our identity formation. This analysis can help us understand how external forces shape our identity formation. In this learning guide, we define critical consciousness and how our socialization, consciously and unconsciously, informs our sense of self and our interactions with others. We also dive into concepts like implicit bias, microaggressions, and shared equity leadership. We will also address how oppression and privilege inform who we are and how we show up.
