Verification of Non-filing

If your FAFSA is selected for verification and you did not file a tax return, you will need to verify your income by completing our non-filer statement, found on the Forms page.

Independent students and parents of dependent students must also verify their non-filing status by obtaining a Verification of Non-filing Letter from the IRS. You can obtain this letter by going to www.IRS.gov and selecting “Get My Tax Record.”

If you are not able to obtain the letter from the IRS website, you can request it via a paper form, IRS Form 4506-T. You can choose to have the Verification of Non-filing Letter sent to Macalester directly, or you can have it sent to you and provide us with a copy. Form 4506-T is available on our Forms page, with the correct box checked off and our address and appropriate tax year filled in.

As of January 9, 2019, the Department of Education has stated that if you are unable to obtain a Verification of Non-filing Letter from the IRS, you may provide a signed statement certifying that you attempted to obtain this letter but were unable to do so.

Please remember that Verification of Non-filing Letters only apply to parents and independent students. Dependent students whose FAFSAs were selected for verification and who did not file a tax return only need to complete the non-filer statement; they do not need to verify their non-filing status.
