How do I take the online (WebCape) placement exam?<\/strong> WE REQUIRE THAT YOU TAKE THIS TEST CLOSED-BOOK, WITH NO ASSISTANCE FROM OTHERS.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n To take the online test follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The test takes approximately 15-20 minutes. At the end of the test you will be shown your score and the appropriate course placement. Or refer to the tables below to determine which language course to register for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Find the range of scores that contains the score you received in the left-hand column. Go across the row to the right hand column that lists the appropriate course to register for.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n What do I do with the online (WebCape) score?<\/strong> Placement test scores are as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n *** French 101 is\u00a0intended\u00a0for students who have never studied French before,\u00a0or with only limited study of the language, and\u00a0do not have advanced knowledge of\u00a0another related language (Spanish, Italian, Portuguese).FREN 101 prepares students for French 2 (FREN 102).<\/p>\n\n\n\n *** French 111 is an accelerated beginning course,<\/strong> and is designed for students who have had a year or two of French, or who have advanced knowledge of a related language (Spanish, Italian, Portuguese). FREN 111 covers the materials of both 101 and 102 in a single semester, and prepares students for French 3 (FREN 203). <\/p>\n\n\n\n Can my previous course work fulfill the language requirement?<\/strong> I am interested in taking the French Proficiency Exam to test out of the language requirement. <\/strong>Yes, if you completed the AP exam in French with a score of 4 or 5. Students with IB credit or diploma from a lyc\u00e9e fran\u00e7ais should contact the department chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/strong>In order to test out of Macalester\u2019s foreign language requirement you must take the AP French exam and score a 4 or 5. You cannot \u201ctest out\u201d of the school\u2019s language requirement with the online (WebCape) placement exam. The online (WebCape) exam is only to help you figure out which class would best suit your ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
