{"id":64,"date":"2017-10-04T20:03:44","date_gmt":"2017-10-04T20:03:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-french\/becomeamajor\/"},"modified":"2026-10-06T18:00:23","modified_gmt":"2026-10-06T18:00:23","slug":"becomeamajor","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/french\/majorsminors\/becomeamajor\/","title":{"rendered":"French and Francophone Studies Major"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Major Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A major in French consists of a minimum of nine courses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.macalester.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=29&amp;coid=146901\">FREN 204<\/a> if student arrives at Macalester and places below 300-level<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.macalester.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=29&amp;coid=146905\">FREN 306<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Six other advanced courses (300- and 400-level) if student counts <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.macalester.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=29&amp;coid=146901\">FREN 204<\/a> OR seven advanced courses if student starts at the 300-level, including one upper-level course on a period preceding the 20th century (<a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.macalester.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=29&amp;coid=148505\">FREN 371<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.macalester.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=29&amp;coid=149018\">FREN 380<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.macalester.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=29&amp;coid=148465\">FREN 445<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.macalester.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=29&amp;coid=148496\">FREN 446<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.macalester.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=29&amp;coid=148499\">FREN 451<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.macalester.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=29&amp;coid=149019\">FREN 452<\/a>, or an equivalent relevant topics course)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Senior capstone requirement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Semester of study away in a French-speaking region, or an alternative immersion experience.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Up to three courses from an approved study away program can count toward the major<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students must take at least one upper-level FREN course at Macalester after they return from their immersion experience, such as a semester of study away<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Senior Assessment<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>During the senior year, majors will be required to demonstrate proficiency in language, literature and culture by successfully completing a series of evaluations as outlined in departmental materials.
