ReGroupReGroup

November 6 – December 6, 2009
Artist’s Reception: Friday, November 6.
7:00 to 9:00 pm.

Shana Kaplow’s new paintings of groups and individuals explore the tension between interconnectedness and individualism. For Kaplow, this is as much a political observation as a personal one. She asks, “How do we become part of a group, a bigger world?” her work employs a range of approaches, from mimicry of photographic realism to abstract painterly invention. It hovers between familiar representation and its irrational undoing, resulting in a destabilized depiction of the exchange between us. For Kaplow, this is a hopeful vision of a society in the process of remaking itself.

Shana Kaplow is an artist based in St. Paul, Minnesota. She has recently had Exhibitions at Franklin Art Works and the Weinstein Gallery in Minneapolis and the 55 Mercer Gallery in New York. Since 2004 she has been an Associate Professor in Painting and Drawing at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
