{"id":1073,"date":"2018-05-30T19:24:15","date_gmt":"2018-05-30T19:24:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-geography\/?page_id=1073"},"modified":"2024-06-07T20:06:17","modified_gmt":"2024-06-07T20:06:17","slug":"holly-barcus-rural-communities-and-migration-in-the-u-s","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/geography\/research-barcus\/holly-barcus-rural-communities-and-migration-in-the-u-s\/","title":{"rendered":"Rural Communities and Migration in the U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Rural Communities and Migration in the U.S.<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I began my career as a geographer studying rural communities in the U.S., specifically in regions that are often considered to be remote or to be facing significant economic challenges, such as the Great Plains and Appalachia.&nbsp; I finished my doctoral work at Kansas State University, focusing my dissertation research on urban-rural migration and honing my interests in rural community change.&nbsp; From KSU I moved to Morehead State University in eastern Kentucky, where I was privileged to have opportunities through the Institute for Regional Planning and Public Policy, to engage widely in local projects related to housing, youth development, migration, and place identities.&nbsp; After four years, I moved to Macalester College, where my work has primarily focused on Kazakh ethnic minority migration in Mongolia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although I\u2019ve worked less in the U.S. recently, I remain intensely interested in remote and rapidly evolving rural regions in North America and teach a course specifically related to this topic \u2013 <em>Rural Landscapes and Livelihoods<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">List of Publications<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Journal Articles<\/em><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Barcus, H.R. and Laura J.
