Three types of job opportunities are available in the Department.\u00a0 For information on specific job requirements, current openings, and\/or to apply for a position in Geography, please see the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/employmentservices\/studentemployment\/\">Student Employment\u00a0<\/a>website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Office Assistant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Geography Department Office Assistant tasks include but are not limited to:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Serve as department receptionist and answer phones; interact politely and knowledgeably with walk-in visitors;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pick up and deliver mail, Document Services projects, and other deliveries on campus;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assists staff with preparation for special events, e.g., department sponsored workshops and conference, department gatherings, etc.;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Type letters, documents, spreadsheets, reports, labels as directed, using appropriate computer applications;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scan documents and creates pdfs;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assists with webpage updates;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Perform general housekeeping tasks in the office area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Knowledge, Skills and\/or Perspectives Acquired or Developed on the Job:<br><\/em>Reinforcing Institution-wide Goals for Student Learning; Thinking Critically and Analyze Effectively;&nbsp; Communicate Effectively; and Make Informed Choices and Accept Responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Web &amp; Social Media Assistant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Geography Department social media assistant\/digital storyteller duties may include: <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Working with the Department Coordinator to build and execute a social media strategy for the Geography Department via social media outlets<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Generating, editing, publishing and sharing content spotlighting department faculty, staff, students, alumni, courses, and social events.&nbsp; For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2 \u2013 3 in-depth digital stories per semester<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a weekly post re-capping and looking forward to Geography related happenings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>digitally capture department events \u2013 speakers, field studies, career panels, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a Geography Department newsletter each semester to distribute to students and alumni<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Stay current with social media trends and best practices<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Knowledge Skills and\/or perspectives Acquired or Developed on the Job:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Think Critically and Analyze Effectively<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communicate Effectively<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make Informed Choices and Accept Responsibility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Job Requirements<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strong writing\/editing skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thorough knowledge of social media tools (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google photos, Flickr, etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Graphic design and visual communication knowledge <em>preferred<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creativity and enthusiasm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Solid organizational skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ability to work independently<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attention to detail<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teaching Assistant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><br><\/em><\/strong><em>Geography Department teaching assistant duties may include, but are not limited to:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>organizing and facilitating review sessions for exams;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>correcting certain types of assignments and\/or exam questions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>facilitating discussions in break out groups;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>holding office hours and responding to student questions on course materials;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>providing feedback on drafts of selected writing assignments;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>assisting the faculty member in course related research and the preparation of course materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Knowledge Skills and\/or perspectives Acquired or Developed on the Job:<br><\/em>Reinforcing Institution-wide Goals for Student Learning; Think Critically and Analyze Effectively; Communicate Effectively; Demonstrate Intercultural Knowledge and Competence; and Make Informed Choices and Accept Responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lab Assistant &#8211; Tier 2 &amp; 3<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><br>A GIS Lab Assistant staffs the GIS Lab during assigned times throughout the week. The following is a list of typical duties performed by a GIS Lab Assistant:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Working through all lecture exercises and laboratory assignments that will be taught during semester.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reading all materials assigned during the semester.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supervising assigned laboratory periods during both day and evening.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assisting students with questions about assignments and projects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Responsible for printing student map assignments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preparing materials before class for use in lab, e.g. projector, maps, GPS units, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Responsible for straightening up lab (e.g. chairs, etc.) and locking up room at the end of the day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Completing GIS and mapping projects for Macalester faculty and outside community organizations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Knowledge, Skills and\/or Perspectives Acquired or Developed on the Job:<br><\/em>Demonstrate Intellectual Depth and Breadth (deepen your GIS and troubleshooting skills);
