Our field is about way more than looking at rocks: we seek to understand how mountains form, how life evolves, how glaciers move, and how entire oceans expand and contract. As a geology major, you\u2019ll learn about the interconnectedness of the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere; you\u2019ll study the evolution of life on this planet over millions of years; you\u2019ll ponder how processes deep inside the planet impact the Earth\u2019s surface and climate; and you\u2019ll consider how, in the age of humans and climate change, the world might evolve next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A geology degree will teach you:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How the natural world around you has evolved, and continues to evolve, over time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How study of the past can inform our understanding of climate change today<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How coveted natural resources are formed, distributed, and depleted, from the water you drink to the metals in your cell phone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How life on our planet has evolved in conjunction with earth processes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why major in Geology at Macalester? Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s tough to beat Macalester\u2019s urban location, which offers numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/geology\/studentopportunities\/\">research and internship opportunities<\/a> through our connections to local museums and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/geology\/facilities\/labs\/\">research labs<\/a>. The state (and surrounding region) also contains an abundance of interesting geological features\u2014many resulting from the ancient oceans and glaciers that once covered the area\u2014including an abundance of interesting rocks and fossils just down the road at the Mississippi River. Finally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/geology\/facultystaff\/\">our faculty<\/a> love working side-by-side with Macalester students, and invite many of them to collaborate on research as we explore and discover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our research-active faculty offer students the chance to:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Analyze glacial lakes in Glacier National Park, Montana<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dig up dinosaur bones in Montana, Madagascar, and other locales<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collect samples from earth\u2019s crust in the Sierra Nevada mountains, Mexico, and other destinations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reconstruct ancient environments and ancient climates way out West and right here in Minnesota<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Current home of the Keck Geology Consortium<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1980s, several of the nation\u2019s top liberal arts colleges joined forces to create the <a href=\"https:\/\/keckgeology.org\/\">Keck Geology Consortium<\/a>, which organizes and sponsors research projects for the next generation of geoscientists. Today, Macalester is proud to not only be a member school, but to also serve as the co-organizer for the consortium. Our professors also frequently lead students from Macalester and the other Keck schools on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/geology\/fieldtrips\/\">research trips around the country<\/a>, including one to sample glacial lake cores in Glacier National Park, another to study reefs in Belize, and yet another to dig up dinosaurs in Montana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Life after Macalester<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After leaving Macalester, geology majors go on to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/geology\/aftermacalester\/\">wide variety of careers<\/a>. We\u2019ve placed students in many of the most prestigious geology PhD programs around the country, where they\u2019ve studied methods for precisely dating rocks, the effects of forest fires on soil erosion, the formation of mountains, and the quality of the fossil record (among many other things). Plenty of our graduates complete their graduate studies and stay in academia for their careers, and many others find fulfilling careers as environmental consultants, teachers, science communicators, whose authors included both Macalester&#8217;s Emily First and her father Phillip. In April, the capstone and honors talks given by our 16 seniors were amazing.  The vans were packed for overnight regional field trips for four different classes.  And Lacuna Bajada, the Spring Picnic included some surprise bagpiping in honor of Alan&#8217;s promotion to Full Professor.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>December 5, 2024<\/strong> the department celebrated the <strong>20th Annual J\u00f6kulhlaup<\/strong> BBQ in balmy 19&nbsp;\u00b0F and party sunny conditions.  The J\u00f6kulhlaup borrows its name from the Icelandic term for a glacial outburst flood, and happens at the end of the fall term.
