These courses are intended for interested students from other disciplines as well as for German majors. German 327 as well most of the German 394 topics courses also fulfill the theory requirement for German majors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>German 255: German Cinema Studies<\/strong><br>A first-year course, this seminar focuses on topics such as \u201cFilm and the Fantastic,\u201d \u201cNazi Cinema,\u201d and \u201cMedia, Art, Horror.\u201d Every fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>German 327: Darwin, Nietzsche, Freud<\/strong><br>This course explores the works of Friedrich Nietzsche and Sigmund Freud as reactions to the \u201cdeath of God.\u201d Spring of even-numbered years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a class=\"download\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-german\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/531\/2012\/05\/germ337.pdf\">German 337: Dead White Men: Constructions of Time<\/a><br>This course pursues readings of European, Western Philosophical thought as the unconscious undercurrent of contemporary thought. Every other year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>German 394: Topics<\/strong><br>Fall 2013 we have one topics course: A Kafkaesque Century.&nbsp; Recent topics have included &#8221; Value: The Bad, the Ugly, and the Cheap,&#8221; \u201cMetaphysics in Secular Thought,\u201d \u201cHeidegger, Gadamer, Derrida,\u201d \u201cTheoretical Approaches to European Cinema,\u201d \u201cConcepts of Freedom from Kant to Agamben.\u201d At least once a year.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In addition to courses on literature and culture taught in German, the department offers courses taught in English on a variety of topics including cinema, critical theory, and German thought.
