Ross Shields (Ph.D., Columbia University) teaches German language courses alongside a range of seminars that include \u201cIntroduction to Literary Modernism: Words are Hard,\u201d \u201cCulture and the Capital: Berlin and Vienna,\u201d and \u201cCritical Ecologies\u201d (cross-listed with Environmental Studies).<\/p>\n
His research focuses on German literature and intellectual history from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, with particular interests in aesthetics and theories of perception, morphology and the history and philosophy of science, modernism and the interarts, and ecocriticism and environmental thought. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, including \u201cFrom Climate Models to Climate Fiction: Kim Stanley Robinson\u2019s The Ministry for the Future<\/em> as Operative Literature\u201d<\/a> (in Breaking and Making Models<\/em>, 2025)<\/em>, \u201cThe Piecemeal Coherence of Kafka\u2019s Alchimistengasse<\/em> Notebooks\u201d (Monatshefte<\/em>, 2023), \u201cMorphology and Music Theory\u201d (in Aus dem Leben der Form II<\/em>, Wallstein, 2021), \u201cZusammenhang (Nexus)\u201d<\/a> (Goethe-Lexicon of Philosophical Concepts<\/em>, 2021), and \u201cWittgenstein on Music and Language\u201d (Germanic Review<\/em>, 2018). He is also a co-editor of a special issue of The Germanic Review<\/em>, \u201cEcology before Nature: From the Nexus of Things to the Web of Life\u201d (2026). His first book, Morphology as Critique: From Kant\u2019s Fiction to Goethe\u2019s Science<\/em>, is forthcoming from Cornell University Press.<\/p>\n Before joining Macalester in 2023, Shields lived in Berlin, Germany, where he held residencies and postdocs at the Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School of Literary Studies, the\u00a0Leibniz-Center for Literary and Cultural Research (ZfL), and the ICI Berlin Institute for Cultural Inquiry.
