{"id":417,"date":"2023-09-06T15:06:50","date_gmt":"2023-09-06T15:06:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-german\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=417"},"modified":"2025-04-09T16:47:51","modified_gmt":"2025-04-09T16:47:51","slug":"ross-shields","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/german\/facultystaff\/ross-shields\/","title":{"rendered":"Ross Shields"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ross Shields (Ph.D. Columbia University) teaches German language courses alongside a<br \/>\nrange of seminars that includes \u201cModernism and the Interarts,\u201d \u201cThe Modernist Fringe,\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cEarly Modern Science,\u201d \u201cGerman Theories of Vegetable Genius,\u201d and \u201cCritical Ecologies\u201d<br \/>\n(cross-listed with environmental studies).<\/p>\n<p>His research focuses on the late eighteenth and early twentieth centuries, contextualizing<br \/>\nliterature, music, and the visual arts with respect to contemporaneous philosophical and<br \/>\nscientific developments. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book<br \/>\nchapters, including \u201cThe Piecemeal Coherence of Kafka\u2019s <em>Alchimistengasse<\/em> Notebooks\u201d<br \/>\n(<em>Monatshefte<\/em>, forthcoming), \u201cCar Crashes in Literature and Film\u201d (in <em>Fuhrpark der Literatur<\/em>,<br \/>\nWallstein, 2022), \u201cMorphology and Music Theory\u201d (in <em>Aus dem Leben der Form II<\/em>, Wallstein,<br \/>\n2021), \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/goethe-lexicon.pitt.edu\/GL\/article\/view\/33\">Zusammenhang (Nexus)<\/a>\u201d (<em>Goethe-Lexicon of Philosophical Concepts<\/em>, 2021), and<br \/>\n\u201cWittgenstein on Music and Language\u201d (<em>Germanic Review<\/em>, 2018). He is currently completing<br \/>\na book manuscript titled <i>All Is Leaf: From Kant&#8217;s Poetics to Goethe&#8217;s Science<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Before joining Macalester in 2023, Shields lived in Berlin, Germany, where he held<br \/>\nresidencies and postdocs at the Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School of Literary Studies, the<br \/>\nLeibniz-Center for Literary and Cultural Research (ZfL), and the ICI Berlin Institute for<br \/>\nCultural Inquiry.
