Kiarina Kordela is Professor and chair of German Studies and founding Director of the Critical Theory Program. She received her Ph.D. at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY.<\/p>\n
She is the recipient of Macalester\u2019s 2014 Outstanding Teaching Award and Macalester\u2019s 2019 Trustee Award for \u201cextraordinary excellence in teaching, advising, research, scholarly work, and service.\u201d<\/p>\n
In addition to German language courses, Professor Kordela teaches cross-listed courses in English toward both the German major\/minor and the Critical Theory concentration, such as \u201c\u2019Dead White Men\u2019 in the Era of Antiracism,\u201d \u201cMetaphysics in Secular Thought,\u201d \u201cMarx, Religion, and Biopolitical Race,\u201d \u201cMarx, the Imaginary, and Neoliberalism,\u201d \u201cGerman-French Dialogues in Critical Theory,\u201d \u201cValue\u201d (a course on aesthetic theory in its relation to economic and ethical values), \u201cSpinoza\u2019s Eco-Society,\u201d and \u201cTheoretical Approaches to European and American Cinema.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her alternate-year courses \u201cA Kafkaesque Century\u201d (a literature course focusing on Franz Kafka\u2019s work) and \u201cCinema Studies\u201d are taught in English and are open to all students. However, German majors or minors can take the course(s) with an additional German component if they want the course(s) to count among their German-taught courses (in the latter case, students read the texts, make several of their oral presentations and write the writing assignments in German).<\/p>\n
Some of professor Kordela\u2019s numerous articles in academic journals and anthologies have been translated in several languages. She is also the author of three book monographs\u00a0Epistemontology in Spinoza, Freud, Marx, Lacan: The (Bio)Power of Structure\u00a0<\/em>(Routledge, 2018),\u00a0Being, Time, Bios: Capitalism and Ontology<\/em>\u00a0(SUNY Press, 2013)\u2014available also in Italian translation (Ombre Corte, 2017)\u2014and\u00a0Surplus: Spinoza, Lacan<\/em>\u00a0(SUNY Press, 2007), as well as\u00a0the co-editor of the\u00a0two-volume collection\u00a0Spinoza\u2019s Authority: Resistance and Power in the Ethics<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Resistance and Power in the Political Writings<\/em>\u00a0(Bloomsbury, 2018), and of the collection\u00a0Freedom\u00a0and Confinement in Modernity: Kafka\u2019s Cages<\/em>\u00a0(Palgrave-Macmillan, 2011).<\/p>\n
