Dear students, faculty, and staff,

While Macalester continues to be deeply committed to the value of study away, and contrary to our sincere wish that we could have come to a different decision, the college has determined that we cannot confidently and safely support study away for the fall semester of 2020. Given health and safety concerns, as well as the lack of clarity around the effects of the virus on travel in the months ahead, we will not permit participation in fall 2020 study away programs.

We are making this announcement now in order to give students who were planning to study away as much time as possible to revise their plans and to reduce stress related to the uncertainty that would accompany a delay in the decision. Most of these students have already registered for fall classes, and we will make every effort to accommodate students who want to reschedule their study away experience. In addition, we will look at other creative opportunities to make study away possible for all students interested in that experience.

We know this is disappointing for those students who were anticipating studying away next semester. In the days ahead, the Center for Study Away will follow up with students impacted by this decision to revise their plans.
