Macalester College and the World Health Organization have collaborated to create a web-based platform that pairs disease-endemic countries in need of research with a global network of students seeking applied topics for doctoral dissertations, masters theses, and undergraduate honor theses. Called EMPaCT (Enhanced monitoring for prevention, access, control and treatment of infectious diseases), the program is a cost-effective way for countries to acquire technical assistance useful for health policy decision making. The first phase of the EMPaCT focuses on Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), which affect one billion people globally and contribute to heath inequalities around the world. Through this project, Macalester students gain access to cutting-edge public health research, real-world policy discussions, and a global network of public health professionals. Students also participate in the design and maintenance of the web-platform, helping to build a model that could be applied to wide variety of pressing global issues.
