She is full professor in WGSS and the English Department. Sonita\u2019s research and teaching interests are:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feminist, literary, and cultural theories<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cultural globalization as it intersects with nationalism, democracy, post\/modernity, and imperialism<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Minoritized\u2019 literatures, with a transnational comparative basis in Western Europe and Asia<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prof. Sarker offers courses in feminist postmodern and postcolonial theories, 20th and 21st century transnational comparative women\u2019s literature, and on culture and sociopolitical activism.\u00a0 Some titles are: \u201cTransnational Perspectives on Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Class,\u201d \u201cGender and Sociopolitical Activism in 20<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century Feminist Utopias,\u201d \u201cWhiteness and Post\/colonialism,\u201d \u201cWorlds Upside Down: Revolutions in Theories and Practices,\u201d and the Senior Seminar which is subtitled \u201cLinking Theory and Practice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Past and recent publications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Her co-edited collection <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trans-Status Subjects: Gender in the Globalization of South and Southeast Asia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0was published from Duke University Press in 2002. Another edited project,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustainable Feminisms<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0under the series Advances in Gender Research, Elsevier Press, was published in 2007.\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post\/Colonial Modernisms<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a section she collated and edited, was published in\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gender of Modernism<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0from Indiana University Press also in 2007. \u00a0 She has published essays on Shashi Deshpande, Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, and Virginia Woolf, and Walter Benjamin in publications from Cambridge University Press, Bloomsbury Press, The Feminist Press, in\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Archiv Orientalni<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and in the\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Women\u2019s Studies Association Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 She has also published essays on neoliberal globalization and subalternization, and on Gramsci and Foucault in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cultural Studies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and from Ashgate Press.\u00a0 Her essay on Cold War feminist transnational literature appeared in a volume on Cold War literature from Palgrave Press.\u00a0 Another article on transnational modernist literature was published on the digital platform <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modernism\/modernity Print Plus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Her reviews appear in\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women\u2019s Review of Books<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women\u2019s Studies Quarterly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modern Fiction Studies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Colonialism and Colonial History<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cultural Critique<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Callaloo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Toronto Quarterly<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Forthcoming publications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Her monograph <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women Writing Race, Nation, and History: N\/native<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is forthcoming from Oxford University Press in 2021.\u00a0 It includes analyses of cultural and political citizenship in the works of Virginia Woolf (England), Gwendolyn Bennett (USA), Ziktala \u0160a (USA, Victoria Ocampo (Argentina), Cornelia Sorabji (India\/England), and Grazia Deledda (Italy).\u00a0 A review and source essay on subaltern studies is forthcoming from Oxford University Press.\u00a0 An essay on New Criticism (early twentieth century British and American literary theory) is forthcoming in a collection on Modernism and Literary Theory from Bloomsbury Press.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Fellowships, Grants, and Awards<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: On the Luisa Selis Fellowship in Italian Studies at the University of London and the Italian Cultural Centre in London (2017), she researched Antonio Gramsci and Grazia Deledda, and delivered lectures on the project in London and New York.\u00a0 She is also the recipient of awards from Ford, Mellon, Bush, Hewlett, FaCE, Keck, and Wallace Foundations.\u00a0 She has served as Distinguished Scholar in Residence at the College of Holy Cross (in Women\u2019s Studies), and as Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Oxford in England. In Fall 2002, she garnered the Ford Foundation\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emerging Leaders, New Directions<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a02-year grant for WGSS; one major event in this grant was the \u2018Sustainable Feminisms\u2019 conference at Macalester (October 3-5, 2003) at which academics, activists, social workers, and policy makers gathered to discuss the relationships between feminist theories and practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She has been the convener of the International Task Force at the NWSA (5 years) and an executive committee member of the MLA division in Women\u2019s Studies in Language and Literature (2 years).
