{"id":1719,"date":"2019-08-20T19:53:18","date_gmt":"2019-08-20T19:53:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/its\/?page_id=1719"},"modified":"2026-02-24T10:38:44","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T16:38:44","slug":"remote-access-vpn-policy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/its\/policies\/remote-access-vpn-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Remote Access VPN Policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Purpose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Macalester College remote access Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows users to connect to the Macalester network from off-campus in order to access Macalester resources that are not directly accessible over the Internet.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scope<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This policy governs appropriate use of VPN by all Macalester College users.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Policy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remote users and endpoints connecting to VPN become an extension of the Macalester network and are therefore subject to the same network use guidelines and policies extended to any other user or host on the network in addition to the following requirements:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is the responsibility of users with VPN privileges to ensure that unauthorized users are not allowed access to Macalester\u2019s internal networks.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All endpoints that access VPN must adhere to and pass any posture criteria set by the Information Security Officer.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is the responsibility of supervisors and department heads to:<\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">determine, in consultation with ITS, which of their office\/department&#8217;s college business activities can and cannot be performed via VPN from off-campus;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">determine under what circumstances it is appropriate for an employee to use VPN to conduct college business, and to request the approval of Human Resources when necessary;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">communicate the above to their employees.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All costs associated with network access from off-campus are the responsibility of the VPN user.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Only VPN software\/clients provided by ITS can be used to connect to VPN.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is the responsibility of all VPN users to keep all credentials, multi-factor authentication methods, and devices used to connect to VPN secure.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some services over VPN are accessible only on Macalester owned endpoints.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Personally owned computers that fail to meet minimum security standards of Macalester owned computers will not be allowed access to VPN.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ITS will only support VPN clients installed on Macalester owned computers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enforcement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Any user found to have violated this policy will be subject to revocation of certain privileges or services, including but not limited to loss of remote access rights.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Version: 1.1<br>Published: August 1, 2019<br>Last Review: February 24, 2026<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Purpose The Macalester College remote access Virtual Private Network (VPN) allows users to connect to the Macalester network from off-campus in order to access Macalester resources that are not directly accessible over the Internet.
