Create Off-campus Friendly Links

When including links to full-text articles from a library research database in Moodle, add a proxy prefix to the article URL.

Why Is This Needed?

  • The Library’s online resources are restricted to current Macalester faculty, students, and staff.
  • The online resources are only available off-campus to a Mac community member when logged in via a proxy server.
  • The proxy server’s address needs to be added to an article’s address in order to make it accessible off-campus.

The proxy prefix is:

So, for example, if you wanted to jump into JSTOR from off-campus (this is not an example of a specific article, just an example to show you how to construct the URL), you would use the following URL:

You only need to add this proxy prefix if the full-text article is from one of our licensed databases or licensed e-journals. Please let us know if you have any questions!

Why EZProxy?

Many of the resources that The DeWitt Wallace Library provides the Macalester community are only available via a paid subscription. Per contract with the vendor of a specific resource, off-campus online access to a resource is to be made available only to current Macalester faculty, students, and staff. The EZProxy prefix makes this possible by requiring current students, faculty, and staff to login while off-campus.

So, how does EZProxy work?

If you are a current Macalester College faculty, staff or student:

Please log in using your Macalester username and password (same as your Macalester College e-mail login.) Once you have successfully logged in, you will be passed directly to the resource you are trying to access.

Is There a Time Out?

Once logged in you may access other Macalester Library resources without logging in again unless you close your browser or are inactive for 30 minutes.
