MSCS Two-Year Visiting Professor Position

Computer Scientist

Macalester College invites applications for a two-year visiting position (pending a successful first year) in Computer Science to begin Fall 2019. Preferred candidates will have completed a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field by the time of appointment. Candidates will work with existing faculty to gain teaching experience with courses at the introductory, intermediate and, eventually, advanced level.

Our department offers a Computer Science major and minor, along with majors and/or minors in both pure and applied math, statistics, and data science. We embrace the combined, collaborative nature of our Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (MSCS) Department in which faculty and students collaborate across disciplines. MSCS is the largest department on campus in terms of enrollments, and in the graduating class of 2019 there are 120 MSCS majors (roughly 20% of the graduating class). More than 40% of senior MSCS majors are in Computer Science. Our faculty value pedagogical and curricular innovation, undergraduate research mentoring, and outreach to the vibrant Minneapolis and Saint Paul metropolitan community. The multidisciplinary environment in the department provides a rich and collegial setting for student education and faculty research.

The MSCS Department has nine full-time computer scientists, plus a part-time instructor, and several other math faculty who contribute to the curriculum. This visitor will participate in all aspects of the program, receive mentorship in teaching, curricular design, and research, and have opportunities to collaborate in research with students.

The Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Department (MSCS) is the largest department at the college, both in terms of faculty and student enrollments. It includes majors in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, and Computer Science. The MSCS Department has a history of national leadership in curriculum development, and encourages innovation in teaching at all levels. Computer science courses typically enroll 15-30 students; undergraduate teaching assistants are available for introductory and intermediate courses. Faculty typically teach five courses per year, two in one semester and three in the other, but a four course-load is also possible.
