Macalester Hiring Visiting Computer Science Faculty Member for Spring

The Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Department at Macalester College is hiring a visiting faculty member to teach one or two sections of “COMP 124, Object Oriented Programming and Data Structures in Java” from January, 2019 through May, 2019.

The course is a second-semester introductory course taught in Java, and enrollment is capped at 16 students. Our current faculty will support the visiting faculty by providing course materials and teaching mentoring. Undergraduate teaching assistants will be available to assist during class activities, hold office hours, and perform most grading.

Macalester anticipates needing an additional full time visiting professor in computer science during the 2019-2020 academic year, and a faculty member who is effective this Spring will receive priority for the 2019-20 position.

Macalester’s Computer Science program is exciting and popular with students. We currently have 10 computer science faculty members, and approximately 100 majors. Students are engaged in many ways including collaborative research with faculty members and a wide variety of internships. The computer science program, and the larger Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science department, is respected for its forward-looking curricula that includes active-learning courses taught in computer labs, a series of application-driven introductory courses, the widespread integration of technologies and software development practices that are actively used in industry, and a  new Data Science minor.
