Visiting Position in Computer Science

Macalester College invites applications for a visiting position in Computer Science to begin Fall 2022. Candidates will teach five courses (full-time). Pending a successful first year, candidates may be able to renew their contract for a second and third year. Preferred candidates will have completed a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field or be pursuing a Ph.D and have completed their coursework. Candidates will collaborate with existing faculty on teaching courses at the introductory, intermediate and, if desired, advanced undergraduate level. Candidates interested in teaching both Computer Science and Data Science courses are particularly encouraged to apply.

Our department offers a Computer Science major and minor, along with majors and minors in both pure and applied math, statistics, and data science. We embrace the combined, collaborative nature of our Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (MSCS) Department in which faculty and students collaborate across disciplines. MSCS is the largest department on campus in terms of enrollments, and in the graduating class of 2022 there are 91 MSCS majors (roughly 17% of the graduating class). Our faculty value pedagogical and curricular innovation, undergraduate research mentoring, and outreach to the vibrant Minneapolis and Saint Paul metropolitan community. The multidisciplinary environment in the department provides a rich and collegial setting for student education and faculty research.

MSCS offers a robust environment for pedagogical growth in Computer Science. More than 56% of senior MSCS majors are in Computer Science and the department includes ten full-time computer scientists, plus a part-time instructor, and several other math faculty who contribute to the curriculum. Computer science courses typically enroll 15-30 students; undergraduate teaching assistants are available for introductory and intermediate courses. This visitor will participate in all aspects of the program, receive mentorship in teaching, curricular design, and research, and have opportunities to collaborate in research with students.

While this is strictly a teaching position, with limited expectations for service beyond routine department activities, we do support visiting faculty who wish to maintain an active research program. Visitors receive funds for travel to conferences and research expenses, and can apply for funding to hire undergraduate research assistants during the summer.

Applicants may apply by emailing application materials to Professor Susan Fox, [email protected], chair of MSCS. Application materials should include a CV and cover letter that addresses courses or areas that the candidate can comfortably teach.  Evaluation of applications will occur on a rolling basis, and will continue until the position is filled
