Program Coordinator for Student Success
Cárol Mejía coordinates student retention efforts for first-generation college students, students of color, and students who come from mixed-status families. Her work centers the identity-based knowledge systems of students from historically underrepresented backgrounds, and honors the rich stories, truths, and intellectual curiosities they bring with them to campus. As a graduate of Macalester, Cárol understands the day-to-day reality of navigating Macalester as a Latina, first-generation college student and United Statesian. Her embrace of Cherrie Moraga’s Theory in the Flesh (defined below) influences her commitment and approach to retention and success:
“A theory in the flesh means one where the physical realities of our lives — our skin color, the land or concrete we grew up on, our sexual longings — all fuse to create a politic born of necessity.”
In her spare time, you can find her playing with her puppy, flipping through the latest issue of Vogue, or cooking probably-less-than-five course meals with family and friends.
