She is the director MacJazz (big band) and is a studio instructor, teaching electric bass, electric guitar, mandolin, and jazz improvisation. She is also the head of the jazz studies department at the University of St. Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Joan\u2019s 2011 CD \u201cA Girl Named Vincent\u201d with Prudence Johnson, the 2008 jazz CD \u201cSambanova\u201d with pianist Laura Caviani, her 2009 CD \u201cAlma Brasileira\u201d with recorder player Clea Galhano\u00a0 and\u00a0 her CD \u201cEnter You, Enter Love,\u201d with Lucia Newell feature many of her own compositions. \u201cEnter You, Enter Love\u201d was chosen as one of the top ten best recordings for 1996 by jazz radio station KBEM. Her choral composition \u201cSweet Noel\u201d won the 1998 Christmas Carol Contest sponsored by the American Composer\u2019s Forum and Vocalessence. Her performances on mandolin include the Minnesota Orchestra\u2018s\u00a0 recording of Mahler\u2019s Das Lied\u00a0 von der Erde and as soloist with the South Dakota Symphony on their premiere recording \u201cJourney to the Badlands\u201d. Her mandolin and bass playing can be heard on the many recording of singer\/songwriter Ann Reed.
