St. Paul, Minn. – Mario Solis-Garcia has joined the Macalester College Economics Department as a tenure-track assistant professor.

Solis-Garcia received his BA from ITESM (Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, Monterrey, Mexico), his first MA from El Colegio de Mexico, and his second MA and his PhD from the University of Minnesota.

His fields of concentration include macroeconomics, growth and development, and financial economics. In particular, his current work explores the business cycle implications of changes in expectations about the course of future fiscal policy, the connection between government policy and the size of the shadow economy, and the effects of regulation on labor markets over Spanish business cycles.

Solis-Garcia’s publications include: “la distribución de las participaciones a las entidades federativas en Mexico: simulaciones de un esquema alternative,” Gestión y Politica Pública 12 (2003), pp. 129-177 with Jorge Ibarra and Alfredo Sandoval, as well as working papers in progress.

His courses this year will include three sections of Intermediate Macro Economics, and one upper level topics course in Computational Economics.
