Skis, MTV, Pensions, and Jellyfish: What We Did Over Summer

jellyfishEmily Loberg ’13 (Salem, Ore.) hates shopping malls, so when she came to college in St. Paul, she bet a friend she’d never set foot inside the gigantic Mall of America.

She happily lost that bet this summer, though, when she snagged an internship at the Sea Life Minnesota Aquarium, located in the MOA’s basement. There the biology major does everything from feeding sharks to testing water quality but is “especially involved with jellyfish,” she says, helping an aquarist with a jellyfish propagation project. They’re breeding their own jellyfish with the help of coffee filters and specially curved tanks called kreisels. “It’s important to get the flow right so they don’t get stuck or ripped,” she notes.

Loberg was pleased to win the Sea Life internship because she plans to study marine biology in graduate school. “It’s exciting to see and work with the animals up close. It has given me more of a feel for what it would be like to come up with my own research.” Indeed over the summer she has already designed her own research project with jellyfish.

Loberg heard about her internship through biology professor Mark Davis, who emailed to biology majors a list of summer opportunities. Hearing about internships from professors is just one way Mac students find this kind of educational work.

Jingjiao Zhang ’12 (Shanghai), an economics and math major, was recruited by Mac alumni for a full-time paid internship at 3M as a financial analyst. She’s working in the treasury department there, helping with pension fund investment and forecasting. She reports having learned a lot over the summer, including how to use probability models to make economics forecasts. She presented her project to the CFO and finance directors at the end of the summer.

Amanda Knopf ’12 (Boulder, Colo.), on the other hand, found her Ski magazine internship by simply looking on-line. To her delight, the veteran downhill skier was awarded the editorial internship, located right in her own hometown. There she’s been doing a lot of fact checking as well as research for the magazine’s annual Gearfinder supplement. Although the English major hadn’t previously considered an editorial career, she says, “It’s more interesting than I thought it would be…I’m definitely enjoying it.”

Like Knopf, Anna Faber ’13 (Washington, DC) is earning credit for her summer internship.

She’s working in MTV’s press office on their pro-social campaigns, focusing on its teenage pregnancy prevention campaign, which is coordinated with the popular show Teen Mom. “I’m doing a lot of things I never thought I’d be doing,” says the international studies major, “but I’m glad I get to work on the social campaigns because that’s what I care about.”
