Taking advantage of Macalester’s location in a major metropolitan area, Jingjiao Zhang interned with 3M’s Treasury Department, where she worked with pension fund investments. Part of her job involved building a Markov Chain Switching model, a statistical model that can help predict the volatility of asset returns, asset prices, and market crashes.

“The internship program was wonderful,” says Zhang. “I met a lot of nice people and learned many useful technical skills, such as Python programming.” Python is a type of computer code that has been used by YouTube, Google, and NASA. Zhang also appreciated the chance to network with other 3M professionals, including doing informational interviews with finance managers and VPs.

She notes that her math major prepared her for the probability model building and her economics courses helped her with making projections. Zhang also brought to the internship business experience she gained from earlier internships with Merrill Lynch and UBS Financials.

“I learned a lot of practical skills at 3M and gained experience with collective probability and the Monte Carlo method,” she continues, adding that she’s using the work she did at 3M on an independent project for her capstone.

Zhang will have many more opportunities next year to use the skills she honed at 3M: She has already accepted a job as an analyst at New York’s Citigroup Investment Banking.
