Harriet Bart Exhibition “Between Echo and Silence” first in Macalester’s Law Warschaw Gallery

St. Paul, Minn. – Harriet Bart, a well-established conceptual artist who works in a wide-range of media, will present the first solo exhibition at Macalester College’s Law Warschaw Gallery in the newly renovated and expanded Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center.  The exhibition, “Between Echo and Silence,” opens Sun., Oct. 7 and is curated by Joanna Inglot, chair and associate professor of Macalester’s Art and Art History department.

The opening reception for “Between Echo and Silence” is Sat., Oct., 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Law Warschaw Gallery, 130 Macalester Street, St. Paul, Minn. The exhibition runs from Oct. 7–Nov. 4.  Gallery hours: M-W and F, 10 am – 4 pm; Th 10 am – 8 pm; Sat. and Sun., noon – 4 pm.

Bart will talk about her exhibition at an artist’s talk, Tue., Oct. 9, at 7 pm, in the Law Warschaw Gallery, and in her honor, on Sun., Nov. 4, at 4 pm, she will host “Soundings for Harriet Bart: Poetry Reading by Nor Hall and Eric Lorberer.”  Hall is an author, theatre artist, and psychotherapist in St. Paul and Lorberer has published poems and edits Rain Taxi Review of Books in Minneapolis.  All events are free and open to the public.

Bart, who is based in Minneapolis, has a deep and abiding interest in the personal and cultural expression of memory; it is at the core of her work. Using bronze and stone, wood and paper, books and words, everyday and found objects, Bart’s work signifies a site, marks an event, and draws attention to imprints of the past as they live in the present.  

“Between Echo and Silence” features her works produced in the last decade, in which historical awareness and political reflection are distilled into an eloquent and poetic form of expression.

Bart’s work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and Germany, and since the 1980s, internationally. She has completed more than a dozen public art commissions in the United States, Japan, and Israel.  

Bart has been the recipient of fellowships from the Bush Foundation, McKnight Foundation, MacDowell Colony, Virginia Center for Creative Arts, NEA (National Endowment for the Arts) Arts Midwest, and the Minnesota State Arts Board.

Bart has published several fine-press books and won two Minnesota Book Awards.

Her work is included in many museum, university, and private collections, including: Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Library of Congress, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Weisman Art Museum, Jewish Museum, National Museum of Women in the Arts, and Sackner Archive of Visual and Concrete Poetry. She is a guest lecturer, curator, and founding member of the Traffic Zone Center for Visual Arts in Minneapolis, Minn.  She is represented by Driscoll Babcock Galleries, New York.
