St. Paul, Minn. – Karla Benson Rutten has been named Title IX Coordinator and Director of Equity at Macalester College. Since 2002, she has been the Director of the Lealtad-Suzuki Center in the Department of Multicultural Life.
Benson Rutten will assume this role on June 15 and report directly to the president.
“I’m very pleased that Karla, who has a deep and extensive knowledge of the Macalester community, its values, and its aspirations, will be taking on these new and important responsibilities,” said President Brian Rosenberg.
This is a new position developed to respond to increasing awareness and concern about the prevention and response to sexual violence and other civil rights on college campuses.
“It’s been an honor to provide vision and leadership to the Department of Multicultural Life and the Lealtad-Suzuki Center, and I am enormously proud of what we’ve accomplished over the past 13 years,” said Benson Rutten. “I am thrilled to be able to continue my professional journey at Macalester in this new and vitally important role, as it is work that is both meaningful to me and essential to the fulfillment of the college’s mission and vast potential as a leader in advancing issues of diversity, equity and inclusion.”
Benson Rutten will oversee and implement policies and initiatives associated with Title IX. She will also provide leadership and work with Macalester community members on education and concerns related to discrimination, educational equity, affirmative action, and the promotion of diversity and inclusion.
