Lillian Hexter ’16 (Boston) has worked at Macalester’s Annual Fund since she was a first-year; she now serves as a Lead Class Agent to encourage her classmates to give back to Macalester through the Senior Class Gift. This semester, Hexter took an internship with College Possible to continue exploring her interests in fundraising and development.

A nonprofit AmeriCorps organization, College Possible supports low-income students through the college admissions process. As a special events & individual giving intern, Hexter manages event data and conducts research on potential donors. “I always feel like the work I’m doing is meaningful, that I’m able to contribute in some way,” said Hexter. “It’s also cool that this internship connects with a class I am taking this semester: an American studies and educational studies cross-listed class called ‘Race, Culture and Ethnicity in Education.’ College Possible is an organization that aims to address and tackle the same economic and racial inequities in education that we talk about every day in class.”

In November, College Possible threw a 15 Year Celebration; Hexter kept track of the RSVPs for this event and gained familiarity with new event modules in fundraising software.

“This internship solidified that I could see myself doing this work for a nonprofit like College Possible—an organization that has a clear social justice mission and is committed to working with marginalized communities,” said Hexter. The American studies major will graduate in May with minors in Hispanic studies and psychology. “Doing an internship is a great opportunity to get off campus and explore an issue that you’re interested in. There is so much you can learn outside the classroom and internships really reinforce that idea.”
