As they pour onto campus later this month, the 512 members of the Class of 2020 will make themselves quickly known.
This year Macalester had 5,946 students apply for enrollment, with only 37 percent admitted. As the school year begins, Macalester’s total enrollment will be at 2,125, still a bit higher than the target of 2,000 students that the college has set.
More than two-thirds of this year’s accepted students come from the top 10 percent of their high school classes; their median ACT score was 31 and their median SAT score was 2070.
Academics isn’t the only area in which these students excel: The Class of 2020 includes a professional fisherman, a professional sportswriter for the Oregon Sports News, the author of “Calculus Fairy Tales,” and one member of an accomplished Americana music duo based in Chicago.
This talented group represents 47 U.S. states plus Washington, D.C., and the Mariana Islands, as well as 44 other countries. The top sending countries this year were China, Vietnam, Korea, and India. The top states were California, Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, and New York. International students make up 15 percent of the class this year. Domestic students of color make up 28 percent of the incoming class.
