The annual opening convocation featured Gloria Perez ’88, president and CEO of Jeremiah Program and one of the country’s leading experts in using two-generation strategies to reduce poverty. Perez told the audience about her Mac experience, which launched her lifelong commitment to civic engagement and included a formative job at the Uptowner Café that taught her how to run a business. She encouraged students to cultivate a spirit of curiosity—and “when you find yourself in a position of power to be a connector or to open a door for someone, do it.”
