The Macalester College softball team spent nearly two weeks in South Africa during Winter Break. The tour included three softball games against local teams, lots of sight-seeing and also some softball clinics for local youth organizations. Senior infielder Katja McKiernan (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) and sophomore outfielder Julia Carpenter (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) provided the following reflection on the team’s experiences in South Africa.
“This trip was truly awe-inspiring, a perfect mix of softball competition and volunteerism, cultural education and sightseeing. It exposed us to another side of the world, highlighting both the differences and similarities between South Africa and the United States. And for those of us that haven’t gotten the chance to study abroad or travel internationally, the experience was an introduction to the world beyond the Macalester bubble.”
