Breath Bound includes works by faculty members Jill Lile and Patricia Brown. Lile presents Ride it Out, a piece about impulse and energy. She describes these two phenomena to be “like a storm pushing around and/or through the body.” In Jingo lo ba by Carlos Santana, Brown addresses the complexity of freedom. Her piece grapples particularly with the idea of being bound to freedom.Student works include that of Linnea Fox ’19. In Fox’s piece, she explores how individuals balance mental health, self care, and interpersonal relationships. Toan Doan ’19 presents We Were Born Soft, a piece which explores the search for softness in a world that abandons human vulnerability. This dance is a statement of grounding in radical softness. In Shallow Breath, Macalester students Meghan Johnson ‘19, Tumelo Khupe ’20, Mary Mailand ‘19, and Nteranya Arnold Sanginga ‘19 propose that the human being is composed of the human mind, body, and soul. Through their choreography they address the question: How does stress manifest in these three components of the human being?
