Macalester Board Elects Two New Members
The Macalester College Board of Trustees has elected two new trustees: Dr. Patricia Elizabeth Hume, a physician at the San Francisco Free Clinic in San Francisco, Calif., and Aukse Jurkute, an investment banker for Bank of America Merrill Lynch in London, England. Both have been elected to three-year terms that begin in October. They replace outgoing trustees Melvin Collins of St. Paul, Minn., and Per von Zelowitz of Summit, N.J.

Volunteers of America – Minnesota welcomes Macalester professor to board of directors
Volunteers of America-Minnesota (VOA-MN), a nonprofit health and human services organization, recently welcomed Macalester College American Studies Prof. Karin Aguilar-San Juan to its board of directors. Aguilar-San Juan is one of two new board members who will bring fresh perspectives and deep experience in restorative justice to an organization with a long history of helping ex-offenders and at-risk teens.
Macalester Math professor receives a SIAM Outstanding Paper Prize
The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) has chosen a paper co-written by Macalester Math Prof. Chad Topaz and Prof. Andrew Bernoff of Harvey Mudd College for one of three outstanding paper prizes in 2013. Their paper, A Primer of Swarm Equilibria, SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems Vol. 10, Issue 1 (2011), pp. 212-250, will also reappear as a "SIGEST" article in SIAM Review, the society's flagship journal.
Professor to continue work in Mongolia with an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellowship
Macalester Geography Professor Holly Barcus has been awarded a New Directions Fellowship from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to acquire additional language and cultural training to more fully extend her work on migration in Mongolia.
Macalester Sociology Graduate Wins National Paper Competition
The American Sociological Association: Sociology of Law Section has given its Undergraduate Paper Award to Mary Pheng of Richfield, Minn., a 2013 Macalester Sociology graduate. Pheng received the award for her paper “The Bureaucratic Savior: How Human Service Professionals Allocate Rights to Noncitizens.” The award will be presented during the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association this August in New York.

Abass Noor is the senior class speaker. Noor, born in Somalia and raised in New Hope, Minn., is a Biology/Biochemistry major and Chemistry minor, with a Community and Global Health concentration.

Macalester Receives $800,000 Grant from Mellon Foundation for Immersive Learning
Macalester College has received an $800,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in New York to support immersive learning experiences for both students and faculty as a means of enhancing the power of a liberal arts education. The nearly four-year award will fund this project through the 2016-2017 academic year.

Students receive U.S. State Department Critical Language Scholarship
Yevgeniya Berdysheva ’14, from Skokie, Ill. and Patrick Snyder ’13 from Versailles, Ky., have been awarded the U.S. State Department Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to study a critical language this summer. Berdysheva will study Chinese, and Snyder will study Arabic.
