Students Strive to “Build a Better Mac”
“How can we make Macalester better?” That’s the central question a new student-led initiative is addressing. Last fall more than 100 students came together to identify ways to strengthen the college and make it an even better place to live and learn. True to the spirit of their concern, they’re calling the effort ‘Build a Better Mac.’
Macalester Sociology Majors Sweep Prizes in Midwest Sociological Society Paper Competitions
Senior sociology majors Evelyn Daugherty, Jenny Evgenia Grinblo, and Morgen Chang have won the top three prizes awarded in the Forty-eighth Annual Midwest Sociological Society Student Paper Competition. Daugherty and Grinblo were co-awarded first prize and Chang received third prize.
Macalester College 6th in Placing Peace Corps Volunteers
For the sixth year in a row, Macalester has placed on the Peace Corps’ list of top colleges nationally producing Peace Corps volunteers. With 22 alumni currently serving as Peace Corps volunteers, Macalester is No. 6 in this year’s rankings among small-sized colleges and universities (tied with Johns Hopkins), moving up from No. 7 in 2010, and No. 9 two years ago.
The Kids are All Right: Few Negative Associations With Moms’ Return to Work Soon After Having Children
Children whose mothers return to work before their offspring turn 3 are no more likely to have academic or behavioral problems than kids whose mothers stay at home, according to a review of 50 years of research.
