This winter, Mac students visited one of the newest museums in the Twin Cities: the Minnesota African American Heritage Museum & Gallery. In a room with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the corner of Penn and Plymouth avenues on Minneapolis’s north side, the Museum Anthropology class studied art and history exhibits before meeting with co-founders Coventry Royster Cowens and Tina Burnside for a question-and-answer session. The field trip was one of three Twin Cities museum visits in the syllabus for Museum Anthropology, taught by Latin American studies chair and anthropology professor Olga González. In addition to the museum visits, students also completed group ethnographies, for which they interviewed museum practitioners about curating exhibitions and shaping the visitor experience.
