Former Macalester Trustee W. John Driscoll dead at 83

W. John Driscoll of Sunfish Lake, Minn., died peacefully Saturday, December 22, 2012, at home with his family. A long-time supporter of Macalester College, Driscoll fought Parkinson's for many years. He was 83.

French Meadow Bakery & Café to open in St. Paul near Macalester

French Meadow Bakery & Café is coming to St. Paul.  The bakery and café will open at 1662-66 Grand Ave., former home to Coat of Many Colors and Coffee News Cafe. French Meadow on Grand will occupy the entire first floor of the building that is owned by Macalester College. In January the company will begin renovations and is expected to open in May 2013.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Macalester College and 18 other colleges and universities across the United States a three-year collaborative grant in the amount of $437,883 in support of undergraduate research.  The 19 undergraduate-focused institutions are a consortium known as “The Undergraduate ALFALFA Team” (UAT).

The El-Kati Distinguished Lectureship in American Studies with the theme  “Transgressing Boundaries & Black Identities,” presents two talks this year.  University of Chicago Prof. Cathy Cohen will present, A Post Election Discussion on Nov. 8, and Duke University Prof. Mark Anthony Neal will present, A Discussion on a New Vision of Black Masculinity on Nov. 9, both at Macalester College.
