Below are highlights from September 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Angling for mentorship<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Alexander Thomas \u201922<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earned the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.noma.net\/noma-foundation-fellowship\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Organization of Minority Architects Foundation Fellowship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which aims to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/news\/article\/150261342\/noma-s-foundation-fellowship-nurtures-the-next-generation-of-architects-and-designers-through-mentorship-and-professional-development-at-19-architecture-firms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provide professional experience to underrepresented students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One of 24 architecture students selected for the summer 2021 cohort, Thomas received a $2,560 stipend to work with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fxcollaborative.com\/activity\/news\/628\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FXCollaborative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a NYC architecture firm. As part of a team tasked with renovating a Times Square building, Thomas worked on everything from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">floor plans to 3D models. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The eight-week fellowship included professional mentorship opportunities with established architects of color. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talking with them allows me to get a better sense of my own path and perspectives on architecture, and helps grow my personal and professional network,\u201d said Thomas. The $1,000 stipend for obtaining an architecture license \u201cgoes a long way toward making the profession accessible,\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Paving the way to citizenship<\/h2>\n<p><b>Katherine McCarthy \u201922<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> received an Honorable Mention for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.literacymn.org\/literacy-minnesota-annual-awards\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Literacy Minnesota 2021 Outstanding Volunteer Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As a volunteer teacher with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oscs-mn.org\/english-learning-center\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">English Learning Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Minneapolis, McCarthy supports adult immigrants and refugees seeking to increase their English literacy. Now in her fourth year, she helps lead the Citizenship Program, updating the material to reflect new citizenship test information and making the curriculum more accessible and intuitive for online learning. \u201cIt was so flattering to feel seen and appreciated in a community I love,\u201d said McCarthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Getting psyched for sustainability<\/h2>\n<p><b>Dr. Christie Manning,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> director of Sustainability and a faculty member in Environmental Studies, co-authored a new book called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Psychology-for-Sustainability\/Scott-Amel-Koger-Manning\/p\/book\/9780367480691\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychology for Sustainability<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This college-level textbook applies psychological science to so-called environmental problems that manifest when human behavior disrupts and degrades natural systems. \u201cI am excited about the engaging tone of the book and the new content in this updated edition: A focus on collective action and a strong environmental justice theme woven through many of the chapters,\u201d said Dr. Manning. Timely topics include climate change, biodiversity loss, environmental racism, Indigenous perspectives, social media, and COVID-19 and other pandemics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Far from home in Minnesota<\/h2>\n<p><b>Paul Cosme \u201922<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published a first-person essay in the new book called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/books\/this-was-2020-minnesotans-write-about-pandemics-and-social-justice-in-a-historic-year-minnesotans-minnesotans-write-about-pandemic\/9781087967622\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Was 2020: Minnesotans Write About Pandemics and Social Justice in a Historic Year<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cMy contribution to the book highlights my experience as a Filipino citizen stuck in the Twin Cities during the COVID-19 pandemic and the George Floyd protests,\u201d said Cosme. \u201cThese circumstances forced me to think about my experiences as a Filipino dissenter and critic against the violence of my own government and its parallels to what I experienced in Minnesota.\u201d The book is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mnwritesmnreads.org\/2021\/09\/10\/finalist-feature-this-was-2020-minnesotans-write-about-pandemics-and-social-justice-in-a-historic-year\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finalist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mnwritesmnreads.org\/communities-create\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 Minnesota Author Project: Communities Create<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contest<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an award highlighting independently published authors in the state.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Let\u2019s talk about liberal thought and inequality<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Political Science Professor <\/span><b>David Blaney<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> co-authored a new book with Ithaca College Professor Naeem Inayatullah entitled<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/rowman.com\/ISBN\/9781538155165\/Within-Against-and-Beyond-Liberalism-A-Critique-of-Liberal-IPE-and-Global-Capitalism\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within, Against, and Beyond Liberalism: A Critique of Liberal IPE and Global Capitalism<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geared toward scholars and graduate students, the book grew out of a \u201clong concern with inequality, especially global inequality and the way variants of liberal thought sanctify inequality,\u201d said Dr. Blaney. The book also emerged from years of teaching the courses \u201cGlobal Political Economy\u201d and \u201cWork, Wealth, and Well-Being\u201d at Macalester.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Well-versed on book awards<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">English Professor <\/span><b>Michael Prior<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> received the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bcyukonbookprizes.com\/2021\/09\/25\/2021-winners-announced\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 BC and Yukon Book Prizes\u2019 Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, earning $3,000 for his book of poems, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.ca\/books\/605168\/burning-province-by-michael-prior\/9780771072345\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burning Province<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt&#8217;s a particularly meaningful honor for me because I&#8217;m from British Columbia, where my family still lives, and because <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burning Province<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explores questions of intergenerational memory and cultural trauma related to the province&#8217;s history,\u201d said Prof. Prior. The collection was inspired by the wildfires that scorched British Columbia in 2015 and 2017 and his grandparents\u2019 experiences of Japanese-Canadian internment during the Second World War. Praised by the publisher as \u201cacerbic, moving, and formally astonishing,\u201d Prof. Prior\u2019s collection has already won the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/canadacouncil.ca\/funding\/prizes\/canada-japan-literary-awards\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canada-Japan Literary Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is shortlisted for the Raymond Souster Award.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Appetite for change at the UN<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geography Professor<\/span><b> Bill Mo<\/b><b>seley<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was reappointed to a United Nations advisory committee on food security and nutrition. The 15-member <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/cfs\/cfs-hlpe\/about-hlpe\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High Level Panel of Experts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on food security and nutrition consists of world-renowned scientists who provide high-quality, independent, and impartial scientific evidence to the UN Committee on World Food Security. A rare appointment for a liberal arts college professor, Dr. Moseley was appointed to the Steering Committee in 2019 and has been renewed for another two-year term.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Keeping peers on track <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Kalid Ali \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> received the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.achievempls.org\/2021-excellence-award-kalid-ali\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 AchieveMpls Excellence Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As the strategic nonprofit partner of Minneapolis Public Schools, AchieveMpls helps prepare students for college and careers. The Excellence Award recognizes people who have gone above and beyond to further that mission. Ali was nominated by the Como Park High School Career Pathway Center (CPC) coordinator for his work supporting fellow Como students. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ali became concerned that many of his classmates and soccer teammates were failing classes or didn\u2019t have a post-graduation plan. \u201cAfter talking with my CPC coordinator and my soccer coach, we started working together to get students into the CPC for personalized and expert support in exploring career and college options, applying for postsecondary programs, and securing financial aid,\u201d said Ali.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Mac turns up the heat on sustainability<\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sierra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> magazine recently named Macalester a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sierraclub.org\/sierra\/cool-schools-2021\/cool-schools-2021-full-ranking\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cool School<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in its annual ranking, applauding Macalester\u2019s commitment to protect the planet through campus energy use, transportation, and fossil fuel divestment.
