Below are highlights from November 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Poetic praise<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">English Professor <\/span><b>Michael Prior<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> received the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 Philip Freund Prize for Creative Writing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Cornell University \u2014 his alma mater \u2014 in recognition of excellence in publication. Along with a $5,000 award, the alumni prize comes with an invitation to participate in the Freund Prize Reading in the fall semester. Prior\u2019s most recent poetry collection, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/605168\/burning-province-by-michael-prior\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burning Province<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, won the Canada-Japan Literary Award and the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize and was shortlisted for the Raymond Souster Award. \u201cI&#8217;m honored to have received the Philip Freund Prize in Creative Writing,\u201d Prior said. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burning Province<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wouldn&#8217;t exist without the support and guidance of the Cornell MFA program&#8217;s wonderful faculty and my brilliant cohort, so it means a lot to me to have been invited back to receive the Prize.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Their day in moot court<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two-person team of <\/span><b>Julian Applebaum \u201923<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Rebecca Gentry \u201923<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earned second place in the 2021 Yale Undergraduate Moot Court Invitational. Moot Court is a competitive speech and debate activity simulating Supreme Court arguments. Teams research and prepare arguments about a legal case and compete against students from around the country. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the Yale competition, Applebaum and Gentry<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> placed third at an American Moot Court Association regional tournament and earned a bid to compete in the national tournament in January. \u201cOur team is only two years old, and we\u2019re already holding our own with some of the top programs across the country,\u201d Applebaum said. Gentry added: \u201cWe are laying a strong foundation for Macalester&#8217;s moot court program to thrive in the years ahead. Through Moot Court, we&#8217;re shaping future lawyers who will bring Macalester&#8217;s values to their work.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Coping with climate anxiety<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the many concerns attributed to climate change, the negative effects on our mental health don\u2019t often take the spotlight. But a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecoamerica.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/mental-health-climate-change-2021-ea-apa.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> co-authored by <\/span><b>Dr. Christie Manning<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an environmental psychologist and Macalester\u2019s director of sustainability, aimed to bring more attention to the rising issue as world leaders, diplomats, scientists, activists and others gathered in Glasgow for the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties. The report, entitled \u201cMental Health and our Changing Climate: Impacts, Inequities, and Solutions,\u201d was commissioned for release ahead of the summit by the American Psychological Association and ecoAmerica.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2>Boost in career exploration<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macalester was awarded a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearstfdn.org\/grant-recipients-database\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$100,000 grant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hearstfdn.org\/home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hearst Foundations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in support of community building, career development, and internships for underrepresented students. The Hearst Foundations are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">national philanthropic resources for organizations working in the fields of culture, education, health, and social services. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macalester\u2019s Sophomore Reboot program, led by Career Exploration and Multicultural Life, supports a cohort of 21 sophomores who meet twice each month to build career skills and connections. The program culminates with internship grants that offer students financial support to take on unpaid summer internships.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Addressing sexual assault and relationship violence<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macalester received a $300,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice\u2019s Office on Violence Against Women to support sexual assault and relationship violence prevention and response. The project, titled \u201cIntegrating Resources: Comprehensive, Coordinated Campus Prevention &amp; Response,\u201d will coordinate and enhance prevention and response resources related to sexual assault, dating\/domestic violence, and stalking.
