Below are highlights from January 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Statistically significant<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17557\" style=\"clear: none\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/Portrait3-Amelia-McNamara.jpg\" alt=\"Amelia McNamara\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/Portrait3-Amelia-McNamara.jpg 390w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/Portrait3-Amelia-McNamara-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mac alumna <\/span><b>Dr. Amelia McNamara \u201910<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amstat.org\/ASA\/Your-Career\/Awards\/Waller-Awards.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Waller Education Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from the American Statistical Association. The $1,000 award <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">honors individuals for innovation in the instruction of elementary statistics. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An assistant professor of computer and information sciences at the University of St. Thomas, McNamara said she is passionate about teaching undergraduate statistics. \u201cAt Macalester, I had many fantastic professors who inspired me to be the best instructor I could be,\u201d she said. A double major in English and math, McNamara infuses both subjects into her teaching: \u201cThe award mentions how I&#8217;ve made my statistics and data science teaching interdisciplinary, including elements of data journalism (hello, English major!), as well as my commitment to diversity in STEM,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Professor earns neuroscience award? That\u2019s a no-brainer.<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17554\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/2.Eric-Wiertelak-1-e1643639543148-729x1024.png\" alt=\"Eric Wiertelak\" width=\"285\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/2.Eric-Wiertelak-1-e1643639543148-729x1024.png 729w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/2.Eric-Wiertelak-1-e1643639543148-213x300.png 213w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/2.Eric-Wiertelak-1-e1643639543148.png 757w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 285px) 100vw, 285px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Dr. Eric Wiertelak<\/strong>, professor and\u00a0chair of the Psychology Department, as well as a member of the Neuroscience Program&#8217;s steering committee, received the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.funfaculty.org\/faculty_awards\">Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience Lifetime Achievement Award<\/a>.\u00a0 The Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an international organization devoted to neuroscience education and research at the undergraduate level. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">highest honor in undergraduate neuroscience education, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the Lifetime Achievement Award<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> recognizes individuals who have made outstanding and sustained efforts on behalf of undergraduate neuroscience education and research.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Tenure extended<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17553\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/3.Six-Mac-professors-awarded-tenure.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"711\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/3.Six-Mac-professors-awarded-tenure.jpeg 1080w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/3.Six-Mac-professors-awarded-tenure-300x169.jpeg 300w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/3.Six-Mac-professors-awarded-tenure-1024x576.jpeg 1024w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/3.Six-Mac-professors-awarded-tenure-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 711px) 100vw, 711px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teaching courses such as Immigrant Voices and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Queer Muses in Film and Craft, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">six professors representing a broad range of disciplines were awarded tenure. They are: <\/span><b>Erika Busse-C\u00e1rdenas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Sociology; <\/span><b>Leah Witus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Chemistry; <\/span><b>Jessica Pearson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, History; <\/span><b>Megan Vossler<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Art and Art History; <\/span><b>Katrina Phillips<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, History; and <\/span><b>Amy Elkins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, English. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prof. Busse-C\u00e1rdenas is a sociologist who specializes in international migration, family, motherhood, gender, and race relations. Prof. Witus is an expert in chemical biology, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. Prof. Pearson is a historian of modern and contemporary France with a broader focus on internationalism and global decolonization in the 20th century. Prof. Vossler is a practicing artist with expertise in drawing and illustration. Prof. Phillips works in Native history and the history of the American West. Prof. Elkins is an expert in 20th and 21st century literature, with a focus on gender and sexuality and visual and material culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>\u2018More than just a land acknowledgement\u2019<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/4.Mellon-Foundation-logo-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Mellon Foundation logo\" width=\"711\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/4.Mellon-Foundation-logo-1024x576.jpg 1024w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/4.Mellon-Foundation-logo-300x169.jpg 300w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/4.Mellon-Foundation-logo-768x432.jpg 768w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/4.Mellon-Foundation-logo.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 711px) 100vw, 711px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A groundbreaking new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/2022\/01\/macalester-native-and-indigenous-initiative-receives-1-million-grant-from-mellon-foundation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> called the Macalester Native and Indigenous (MNI) Initiative was awarded a $1 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the nation\u2019s largest funder of arts, culture and humanities<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Combined with a financial commitment from the college, the grant will enable Macalester to create a multi-faceted initiative dedicated to engagement with and scholarship around Indigenous people, culture and history. Activities in the MNI Initiative will include four postdoctoral scholars across several disciplines; an annual residency program for Indigenous experts; the creation of an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Indigenous Voices<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> series featuring speakers, artists, and activists; and paid student internships with community-based partners.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis gives Macalester the chance to show that it is a liberal arts institution that recognizes that Native and Indigenous Studies is more than just a land acknowledgment,\u201d said <\/span><b>Dr. Katrina Phillips<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, citizen of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe and professor of history at Macalester.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A bridge over turbulent waters<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17552\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/5.St_.-Anthony-Falls-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"A photo of St. Anthony Falls\" width=\"712\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/5.St_.-Anthony-Falls-1024x576.jpeg 1024w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/5.St_.-Anthony-Falls-300x169.jpeg 300w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/5.St_.-Anthony-Falls-768x432.jpeg 768w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2022\/01\/5.St_.-Anthony-Falls.jpeg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 712px) 100vw, 712px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A new Macalester-led <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/2022\/01\/project-to-develop-humanities-curriculum-around-mississippi-river-receives-grant-from-mellon-foundation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, titled \u201cMississippi River Watershed: An Immersive Humanities Curriculum,\u201d was awarded $1.497 million in funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The multi-layered, highly collaborative project is one of 12 proposals from liberal arts colleges to receive substantial grants from the foundation\u2019s Humanities for All Times Initiative.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For <\/span><b>Professor John Kim<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, chair of media and cultural studies and one of the project\u2019s leaders, the initiative offers an opportunity to facilitate deep connections between the diverse people, cultures and issues that span the length of the watershed. Students, faculty and community members will collaborate in developing new research, workshops, courses, and digital projects to engage the public. The focus of the work will be around the confluence of race, environment, and resource extraction.
