{"id":17627,"date":"2022-02-21T18:57:45","date_gmt":"2022-02-21T18:57:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/?p=17627"},"modified":"2022-02-21T19:36:14","modified_gmt":"2022-02-21T19:36:14","slug":"geohazards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/2022\/02\/geohazards\/","title":{"rendered":"Geohazards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Professor Alan Chapman shares a snapshot of his geology course Geohazards.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote\"><p><b>Why take this class?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To better understand the processes behind natural hazards (or as I like to call them, the many ways the planet can kill you) and the intersections between hazards and society.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Course description<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An introductory course for students of all backgrounds aimed at: 1) understanding the geology behind disasters, including earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, sinkholes, landslides, climate change, asteroid impacts, and changes in Earth&#8217;s magnetic field; 2) investigating the intersection of risk with society and at a personal level. Also includes one fieldtrip to view sinkholes, landslide debris, and spelunk in the Twin Cities!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why take this class?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To better understand the processes behind natural hazards (or as I like to call them, the many ways the planet can kill you) and the intersections between hazards and society.
