Below are highlights from March 2022.&nbsp;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student scientist on the rise<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Juan Pineda \u201924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Oklahoma City) earned a spot in the competitive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/amgenscholars.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amgen Scholars Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at Johns Hopkins University. An <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">undergraduate summer research program in science and biotechnology, the Amgen Scholars Program is hosted by universities around the world. During the 10-week program, students undertake a research project under top faculty. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The program provides free housing, round-trip travel, a generous stipend, and travel to the annual <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amgen Scholars U.S. Symposium at University of California\u2013Los Angeles.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201cAs a first-generation, low-income student, I was ecstatic when I found out I got into the program,\u201d said Pineda, who is majoring in neuroscience. \u201cThis will be my first research experience, my first step in getting an MD\/PhD, and my first step in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">being able to support my family while doing research in an area I love.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Educating about the history of Black education<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dr. Brian Lozenski<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, associate professor and chair of Educational Studies, published a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brill.com\/view\/title\/54642?language=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">new book <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMy Emancipation Don&#8217;t Fit Your Equation\u201d: Critical Enactments of Black Education in the US.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201cThe book is a primer for people who are new to the exploration of Black education in the US,\u201d Prof. Lozenski said. Weaving through nearly 400 years of history beginning in pre-colonial West Africa to our current time, the book aims to help readers understand the multitude of educational experiences and perspectives of African Americans.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI weave in hip-hop theory and storytelling so that the book reads like a \u2018sweet\u2019 oral history as opposed to a dry list of events and facts,\u201d Dr. Lozenski said. \u201cThe structure of the book comes directly from a course that I teach at Macalester called \u2018Teaching Toward Freedom: The Black Intellectual Tradition in Education.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rising stars<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Minneapolis-Saint Paul Business Journal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> named&nbsp; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/twincities\/news\/2022\/03\/09\/2022-40-under-40-chad-kampe-flip-phone.html#:~:text=2022%2040%20Under%2040%3A%20Chad%20Kampe%20combines%20entrepreneurship%20with%20advocacy,-Email&amp;text=Chad%20Kampe%20is%20a%20former,hosted%20small%2C%20monthly%20dance%20parties.\"><b>Chad Kampe \u201904<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/twincities\/news\/2022\/03\/07\/2022-40-under-40-kate-agnew-optum.html\"><b>Kate Agnew \u201911<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to its annual 40 Under 40 list. The founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flipphoneevents.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flip Phone Events<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Kampe produces and oversees events such as drag brunches, dance parties, and bar crawls. He has grown the company nationwide as an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, helping to raise over $400,000 for local and national nonprofit organizations. \u201cI am in the business of fun and making other people happy,\u201d he told the journal.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Journal called Agnew a \u201cchampion of women in technology.\u201d The senior director of software engineering at Optum, Agnew served as managing director for the nonprofit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/girlsintech.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Girls in Tech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Among her many leadership roles, Agnew is the communications director for the Macalester alumni board. Her fantasy job? \u201cA talk show where I interview amazing women over glittery cocktails,\u201d she told the journal.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ethically speaking, Mac students are good<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a spectacular year for Macalester\u2019s forensics program, the Ethics Bowl team earned the national title <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in the annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.appe-ethics.org\/about-ethics-bowl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl competition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, defeating the University of Chicago in the final round. Ethics Bowl combines \u200b\u200b<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">elements of debate, discussion, and impromptu speaking. Students prepare arguments for real-world ethical dilemmas ranging from facial recognition technology to hate speech regulation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Adding to the triumph, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester\u2019s debate team won the four-year college sweepstakes award at the Gaske Memorial Invitational.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A slam dunk on the pool track<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester\u2019s student-athletes are knocking it out of the park. The men\u2019s basketball team advanced to the finals of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs. Coach Abe Woldeslassie was named a regional Division III coach of the year. Women\u2019s basketball achieved the most MIAC wins since its 2012 season. The swim teams broke 11 school records at the MIAC championships. The women&#8217;s track team earned four All-MIAC honors, while the men performed their best team finish at the Indoor MIAC Championships since 2006. And in the classroom, Macalester\u2019s scholar-athletes achieved an average GPA of 3.65 in their fall semester courses.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Classically trained<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Henry Elsenpeter \u201922<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Circle Pines, Minn.) earned honorable mention for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/camws.org\/fauciaward\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anthony Fauci Award in STEM and Classics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/camws.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Classical Association of the Middle West and South<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an organization of classics teachers and students. The annual award recognizes undergraduate students who demonstrate outstanding work in both classics and a STEM discipline. \u201cReceiving this honorable mention feels like acknowledgment of how valuable a liberal arts education is,\u201d said Elsenpeter, a double major in classics and biology. \u201cDuring my experience exploring biology, I have found that classics does more than enhance the discipline \u2014 it shaped it as a whole. From the innate curiosity that moves biology, to its historical and verbal underpinnings, it is an ageless science that becomes even more captivating with any study of classics.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dear stranger<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Sally Franson, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">visiting assistant professor of English, published an essay in a new book titled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.workman.com\/products\/letter-to-a-stranger\/paperback\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Letter to a Stranger: Essays to the Ones Who Haunt Us<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The collection features the voices of 65 writers who all share one thing in common: an experience with a stranger that they just can\u2019t shake. \u201cMuch of what I teach in \u2018Crafts of Writing: Creative Nonfiction\u2019 I used myself while writing this essay,\u201d Franson said. A virtual<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bookcellarinc.com\/letter-stranger-author-panel\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> event<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on April 13 will feature Franson and a panel of authors who contributed essays to the collection. On top of her literary success, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Franson was recently announced as a winner of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Allt f\u00f6r Sverige<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a long-running Swedish reality show that connects Americans of Swedish heritage with their roots.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conducting honors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester Wind Symphony Director <\/span><b>Shelley Hanson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> conducted an honor band of 117 high school students from four states at Luther College&#8217;s annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.luther.edu\/music\/dorian\/festivals\/band\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dorian Band Festival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The program included one of Hanson&#8217;s own compositions, \u201cElegy for Albinoni,\u201d which is published by Boosey &amp; Hawkes, a major classical music publisher.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Human rights in a high-tech world<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">English Professor <\/span><b>James Dawes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">co-edited a new book called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sunypress.edu\/Books\/T\/Technologies-of-Human-Rights-Representation\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Technologies of Human Rights Representation<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which analyzes the effects of new technologies on human rights. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sunypress.edu\/Books\/T\/Technologies-of-Human-Rights-Representation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">publisher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the book asks the crucial questions: How can we open the black box of technological advances so that we can more fully understand their effects upon our lives? What can we do to make sure that these effects align with the values of human rights?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shine bright, Fulbright<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester College is proud to appear on the list of U.S. colleges and universities that produced the most 2021-2022 Fulbright U.S. Scholars.
