{"id":17978,"date":"2022-04-28T22:52:18","date_gmt":"2022-04-28T22:52:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/?p=17978"},"modified":"2026-03-03T17:29:57","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T17:29:57","slug":"eight-mac-seniors-receive-2022-23-fulbright-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/2022\/04\/eight-mac-seniors-receive-2022-23-fulbright-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Eight Mac seniors receive 2022-23 Fulbright awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Saint Paul, Minn.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2014 Macalester seniors <\/span><b>Katherine Chin, Liliana Brunner, Brian Zou, Marc Mutka, Mary Liebers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Dalton Greene,<\/b> <b>Angela Nguyen <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><b>Shea Husband<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> have received Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards for the 2022-2023 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As Fulbright participants, the eight recipients will study, conduct research, and teach abroad for the 2022-2023 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected in an open, merit-based competition that considers leadership potential, academic and\/or professional achievement, and record of service. As Fulbright alumni, their careers are enriched by joining a network of thousands of esteemed alumni, many of whom are leaders in their fields. Fulbright alumni include 61 Nobel Prize laureates, 89 Pulitzer Prize recipients, and 40 who have served as a head of state or government.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Three students received awards for research:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Katherine Chin will conduct research in law in Trinidad and Tobago.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Liliana Brunner will conduct research in history in Brazil.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brian Zou will conduct research in biochemistry in Sweden.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Five students received awards for English Teaching Assistantships:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marc Mutka will teach English in Panama.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mary Liebers will teach English in Germany.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dalton Greene will teach English in Greece.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Angela Nguyen will teach English in Indonesia.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shea Husband will teach English in South Korea.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;These eight seniors are carrying on a wonderful tradition at Macalester of students putting their talent, experience and passion to great use around the world through the Fulbright program,&#8221; said President Suzanne Rivera. &#8220;We couldn&#8217;t be prouder.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eca.state.gov\/fulbright\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fulbright Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is the U.S. government\u2019s flagship international educational exchange program and is supported by the people of the United States and partner countries around the world. The Fulbright Program is funded through an annual appropriation made by the U.S. Congress to the U.S. Department of State\u2019s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Participating governments and host institutions, corporations, and foundations around the world also provide direct and indirect support to the Program.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 400,000 participants from over 160 countries the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas, and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. The primary source of funding for the Fulbright program is an annual appropriation by the U.S. Congress to the U.S. Department of State\u2019s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
