Below are highlights from May 2022.&nbsp;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Diplomatic achievement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester\u2019s Model United Nations Team earned the Outstanding Delegation award during the 2022 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmun.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Model United Nations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> conference in New York, where students from around the world gathered to devise solutions to some of the world\u2019s most salient issues. Eight Macalester students received Best Delegate awards for exceptional diplomatic skill and innovative ideas.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMacalester\u2019s Model UN team epitomizes many of the school\u2019s most cherished values: internationalism, multiculturalism, and a commitment to improving the world,\u201d said <\/span><b>Katie Herrick<\/b> <b>\u201922<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cThis award recognizes the hard work and talent of each individual on the team, as well as Mac as a whole.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The team includes: <\/span><b>Calvin Blessing<\/b> <b>\u201924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; <\/span><b>North Carpenter \u201923<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; <\/span><b>Jane Dawson \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; <\/span><b>Katie<\/b> <b>Herrick \u201922<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; <\/span><b>Kingsley Hollon-Coleman \u201924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; <\/span><b>Giovanny Martinez Rodriguez \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; <\/span><b>Grace<\/b> <b>McDonough \u201924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; <\/span><b>Holiday O&#8217;Bryan \u201924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; <\/span><b>Quinn Roberts \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; <\/span><b>Colman Smith \u201923<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; and <\/span><b>Cande Torres Jimenez \u201922<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Glacial progress<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Geology Professor <\/span><b>Kelly MacGregor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and her student,<\/span><b> Lou Miller \u201923<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, were co-authors on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1029\/2022JF006598\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">peer-reviewed research article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> published in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Journal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The research helped shed light on glacier change.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our contribution to this project was to provide age controls (or dating) of lake sediments in Lago Argentino, the largest glacier-contact lake in the world!\u201d MacGregor said. Endowed funds from the Geology Department supported Miller, who will look at lake cores from Glacier National Park this summer, in addition to continuing this work.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student presented with high honor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An opportunity shared by Professor Katrina Phillips led <\/span><b>Jarita Chen \u201922<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to receive high honors at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/2022aiicimaginingfuturities\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American Indian and Indigenous Collective\u2019s 9th Annual Symposium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Chen earned the Outstanding Presentation Award for discussing her environmental studies honors thesis, \u201c\u2018Land is Life\u2019: Settler Colonial Governance of National Parks and Hunting in Taiwan.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMy research began through reflections of my identity as a descendent of Hoklo-settlers in Taiwan,\u201d Chen said. \u201cThis was the first academic conference I participated in, and I was excited to present amongst scholars studying related issues. Sharing my research effectively to a broader audience is a crucial part of my work, and I am honored that my presentation was recognized through this award.\u201d Professors Kirisitina Sailiata and Chris Wells served as Chen\u2019s thesis advisors.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Wild\u2019 ideas about dietary diversity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Geography Professor <\/span><b>Bill Moseley<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and his former student <\/span><b>Jane Servin \u201921<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> co-authored a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/19376812.2022.2074481?forwardService=showFullText&amp;tokenAccess=9UW2XI8RGSACPIIGAI7X&amp;tokenDomain=eprints&amp;doi=10.1080%2F19376812.2022.2074481&amp;doi=10.1080%2F19376812.2022.2074481&amp;doi=10.1080%2F19376812.2022.2074481&amp;target=10.1080%2F19376812.2022.2074481&amp;journalCode=rafg20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">research article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> published in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">African Geographical Review<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe hidden safety net: wild and semi-wild plant consumption and dietary diversity among women farmers in Southwestern Burkina Faso.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accelerating accessibility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dr. Lauren Milne<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, assistant professor in mathematics, statistics and computer science, received a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachaccess.org\/initiatives\/grants\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teach Access Faculty Grant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to advance the teaching of the design and development of accessible technologies. With the vision of a fully accessible future, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachaccess.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teach Access<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is an active collaboration among education, industry, and disability advocacy organizations to address the crucial need to enhance students\u2019 understanding of digital accessibility as they learn to design, develop, and build new technologies with the needs of people with disabilities in mind.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Contemplating refugee aliens<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Philosophy Professor <\/span><b>Hannah Kim<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> won first place in the adult essay division of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sejongculturalsociety.org\/writing\/past\/2022\/winners\/1a.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2022 Sejong Writing Competition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for her essay \u201cLanguage, Memory, and Compassion in \u2018Symbiosis Theory.\u2019\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Sejong Cultural Society aims to advance awareness and understanding of Korea\u2019s cultural heritage in the U.S. through outreach to the younger generations via contemporary creative and fine arts.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When teaching is the best medicine<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An excellent undergraduate teaching record earned <\/span><b>Helen Baker \u201904<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.emory.edu\/stories\/2022\/05\/er_commencement_award-emory_williams-09-05-2022\/story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Emory Williams Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The annual award is presented to faculty members in each of Emory University\u2019s four undergraduate schools. A professor in the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, Dr. Baker directs the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fulbright at the museum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mac alumna <\/span><b>Samantha Manz \u201919<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was awarded a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.fulbrightonline.org\/applicants\/types-of-awards\/study-research\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fulbright Open Research Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to study under Dr. Jennifer Kramer at the University of British Columbia\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/moa.ubc.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Museum of Anthropology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Vancouver. Her research will focus on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/moa.ubc.ca\/first-nations-collections\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">First Nations Collections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI plan to analyze beadwork, regalia, and basketry that are a part of coming-of-age ceremonies for young girls and examine the balance between traditional Western conservation practices and cultural care,\u201d Manz said. She applied for the Fulbright through Texas Tech University, where she will graduate with a master\u2019s degree in history in August.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start-up incubation in Europe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mac alum <\/span><b>Elias Tezapsidis \u201910<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> earned a two-year scholarship from the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/globallocal-erasmusmundus.eu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Erasmus Mundus International Master\u2019s Degree in Global Markets, Local Creativities Consortium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Since he attended Mac, Tezapsidis has studied at three universities: the University of Glasgow, the University of Barcelona, and G\u00f6ttingen University.
